    FAQ’s:: Lenses

    This week I am going to start on a series of FAQ’s for photographers who might be new to the business or maybe for those just wanting to know more about how I run my business.  All these questions come from a meeting I had back in January with a sweet, sweet friend looking at possibly starting her own photo business.  With her permission, she allowed me to use these questions as the launching pad of this mini series.  If you have questions that you would like me to address in further posts, please let me know!

    What is your favorite or most versatile lens? (and/ or the other lenses that you use.)
    In most of my shoots and even weddings, I revert to my Sigma art 50mm 1.4 lens.  I LOVE this lens and it is my baby.  I use it for most everything, and feel like I can get close and go way far back to achieve the results I am looking for.
    The second lens I love is the Sigma art 35mm 1.4 lens.  As a wide angle lens, this captures so much more of the big picture of the day.  Most likely these are the two lenses that I will shoot most of the wedding day on and be on my cameras.  Both of these are extremly versatile helping me to grab the look and feel I see happening in front of me.
    Other lenses that I go to are the 24mm, 85mm, Macro lens (mainly for detail shots of the wedding day) 135mm, and a 70-300 zoom (of which I use when shooting the ceremony).
    Hope that helps!  Happy Monday!

      Should I feed my vendors?

      The bill is already getting higher and higher as the guest list continues to go up.  As a bride myself, I honestly didn’t think it mattered to feed my vendors because I was more concerned with the bill than I was the people working for me.  Now that I am on the other side as a vendor myself, I will tell you, by the time dinner time rolls around on the wedding day, I am just as hungry as you are.

      Your vendors, whomever they be, have most likely been running around all day working hard for their clients, and at one point, they are most likely going to need to eat and sit down.  As the photographer, dinner time is probably one of the first times that I get to sit down during the day, and one of the times that guests, as well as the wedding party, do not what to be photographed (who wants photos of themselves eating, right?)  This is a great time to rest our feet and get prepped for the rest of the evening.

      As for where to seat your vendors, that is up to you as the bride and groom.  I have been placed in separate rooms away from guests, which is fine with me, but I am away from the happenings of the dinner.  Say Grandpa gets up to give you a kiss, well I am out of the room to catch it.  Many of my clients typically put me where there is one extra space.  This is helpful for me because I am still able to pay attention to those little happenings while I am actually refueling and getting ready for the next events of the night.  And honestly, I love getting to chat with your friends and family!  It is definitely not necessary that you feed all your vendors, but it is a kind and genuine offer that is much appreciated!

        University of Northwestern Wedding:: Karla & Tim

        Their friends and family were scheming.  They both knew Karla and Tim would be good for each other, but had to get them to go on a first date together.  After some coaxing from Karla’s mother and her good friends, Karla agreed to officially go out with the man she had know about through mutual friends, but never really known.  The two went out and hit it off.  Connecting through Bible Study and knowing they both didn’t want to wait long, the two were engaged!!

        Their winter wedding at the University of Northwestern was absolutely beautiful.  From the navy Macy’s dresses, to the eucalyptus, baby’s breath and pinecone bouquets, to the individualized Coke and Diet Coke bottles on the tables for guests; everything about this wedding spoke of Karla and Tim. After a week of frigid temps and terrible weather conditions, the couple got one incredible day filled with sunshine and lots of laughter with friends.

        I was so honored to be able to be a part of this wedding and I wish you both so much joy and happiness as you enter into this beautiful relationship of marriage together!
