Wedding day photo tips:: For the Bridesmaids

So many things happen on a wedding day. There are loads of resources for a bride, but what about her bridesmaids? What can they do to help?   As friends, and especially those in the wedding party, there are small things that you can do to help make the day go smoothly, more efficiently and alleviate stress for the bride on her wedding day.  Below are just a few examples that I have to offer you as a bridesmaid!

  1. Be on time!   Ask the bride where and when you need to be the day before or even the week before and be there.  There are so many ways a wedding day time line can go off, and you don’t want to be the one making that happen because you are late to getting your make up done.  Even being early to the salon or getting ready spot will ease the bride from more stress she doesn’t need.
  2. Have your hair and make up finished and be in your dress (unless you are taking robe shots) before the bride gets in her dress.  These photos are especially beautiful and help create gorgeous getting ready shots.  When a bridesmaid is helping her friend get into the dress, there are emotions happening and a photo for the album is created.  Let’s face it, most of us as a bridesmaid,  do not want to be in a robe or our comfy clothes in any album that we might look at together 10 years down the line!  (I know this is not always doable, especially if your hair and make up people will be on-site and filtering through all the bridesmaids, but even having one or two bridesmaids in dresses helps created beautiful photos!)
  3. Be another set of eyes for the bride.  Is her dress dragging on the ground, help her carry it.  Is her hair blowing in her face, wisp it away for her. If it is an especially windy day, making sure he veil stays in place is also helpful.  These photos are also beautiful and add to the story line of the day.
  4. Be a consistent source of encouragement.  Let’s face it. There is a reason she asked you to stand with her, you are her friend! You get her and she wants you there.  Make her laugh, keep her calm, remind her of that amazingly hilarious trip to Mexico you took together, and get her laughing or crying!  There are so many ways that you, as a dear friend, can bring out the best in her.  This is an incredible day, have fun with her.  These are some of my favorite photos of the bride and her maids.
  5. Make it about her.  We’ve all been in that wedding where there is that one bridesmaid who kinda, sorta forgets that it is not her day.  Don’t be that girl.  Make it all about helping your friend be the star of her own wedding day.  Stand back in the limelight and if something doesn’t go the way you envisioned it, don’t worry or make it a big deal, today is about her.
  6. If you have kids, have someone else be responsible for them, at least for part of the day.  I know that can be hard, trust me, I have been that mom who has been in the wedding as a bridesmaid, and be mom at the same time.  Getting little people’s hair done right and in the dresses, shoes and ties can be overwhelming.  Hiring a babysitter for a portion of the day, having a grandparent, aunt, uncle or friend help can make it not only less stressful for you, but also the bride.

So I know this not an extensive list, but just some ideas that can be helpful to you as the bridesmaid on a wedding day.

    Vendor Highlight:: Designs by Rita

Rita and I met a few years back when she was the florist at a wedding I was photographing.  I really admire her work and when I asked if she would help me with a spring maternity session by creating a floral crown, she gladly agreed!   She is a veteran in the floral world and someone I look up to as a business owner.  In the ever-changing world of weddings, sticking around and maintaining quality business is hard to come by.  Rita is the real deal. If you have a minute to check her work out, you will not be disappointed. Below are some questions I asked her to answer!

What are 3 words describe your work?
    Honest, Reasonable, Beautiful

How long have you been in business?
I have been doing flowers for 30 years.

Why or how did you get started in your industry?
I wanted my own business and I love being creative, flowers and weddings seemed like a perfect fit!

    What have weddings taught you?
That traditions change and everyone has their own vision.

    What is your style?
My style is my customers style. I truly try to capture the look they are going for.

What is the best thing you have seen happen on a wedding day?
For me personally as the florist, when the bride is brought to tears when she sees her bouquet for the first time.

What are some sources of inspiration or influences on your work?
Like many, Pinterest. However, my inspiration comes from my customers, their vision and always keeping up to date with designs, themes and color palettes.

What’s your favorite way to wind down after a hard day?
Time spent with family and friends. Maybe some snuggle time with my dogs. Sometimes, getting in my sewing room and finding other ways of being creative.

Best or worst wedding advice you received when you got married?
Best…Always remain friends and laugh together, because at the end of the day…you will need that.

Advice you would give to newly engaged couples.
Continue to go on dates…FOREVER. Remind yourself during the rough times what brought you to this place in your life to begin with and if you feel you lost that…FIND IT AGAIN!

What sets you apart in your industry or what do your clients say about you?
My clients like that I’m up front and honest. I don’t push things upon them, I am here to bring their vision to life and to guide them in that direction. They like the fact that my years of experience not only lies in my floral designs, but in planning and organizing of the event itself.

Be sure to look Rita up Online and on Facebook!

      Highlighted Vendor:: Megan Mary Events

Continuing on with highlighting vendors this season, I want to bring your attention to a sweet and wonderful planner I met last year.  Megan and I worked on a styled shoot together this past week (I can not wait to share more of this!) as well as a styled shoot last fall.  She is a wonderful person and planner.  If you are looking to us a planner for your upcoming wedding, either day of or for the full process, look into using Megan Mary Events.  She is phenomenal and will not disappoint!

I asked her a few questions regarding her business and below are her answers!

What 3 words describe your work?
      Practical. Pretty. Planned.

How long have you been in business?
I have had my own business, Megan Mary Events, for 2.5 years now.

Why or how did you get started in your industry?
I have always loved parties and events. I started as a banquet server in high school and my love for the industry grew from there. In college I coordinate a few banquets and that’s when I realized that I had a knack for the project management of large scale parties. Weddings are such elaborate events, it only made sense to dive in and find out what the need was on the project management and coordination aspect of them. I assisted a couple different planners in the Twin Cities before branching out on my own.

      What have weddings taught you?
Weddings have taught me that nothing in life will ever go completely as planned – there are so many moving pieces, so many small details. It’s all about how you plan for those type of hiccups and then the grace that you have to get through them and move on.

Best or worst wedding advice you received when you got married (if you are married!)
Your Mom is your friend, don’t be mean to her in the planning process! Also, remember that times have changed since she has been married – so her ideas about how the day will go and the cost of it may be a little off.

      What is your style?
My style is modern-traditional. What does that mean? Truthfully, I just made that term up. I love traditional aspects of weddings but I also love when the couple puts their own touches on the day. Personalization is SO trendy right now and for good reason – it helps the guests get in to your life and brings your personalities out for your wedding day.

What is the best thing you have seen happen on a wedding day?
The best thing I have seen on a wedding day… It’s been more than once but I love when the couple’s families are friends and get along like they have known each other forever. And totally cliche, but I love when a groom cries while his bride walks down the aisle to him.

What are some sources of inspiration or influences on your work?
I love using Pinterest as a starting point for a vision. Otherwise, I will often see an outfit someone is wearing or a few cool decor pieces at Home Goods. Those real world experiences are really where a lot of my inspiration comes from.

What’s your favorite way to wind down after a hard day?
Sometimes on wedding days I put in 20,000+ steps, my feet are tired and my brain feels like mush. The morning after an event I love waking up to sunshine, enjoying an espresso on my deck and putting my feet up. I also often enjoy leftover flowers from the event the night before – that’s such a fun perk at the end of the night, getting some flowers to enjoy that week!

What sets you apart in your industry or what do your clients say about you?
I always have an assistant planner on the day of an event. It’s so important to have an extra set of hands – we don’t always know where we might be needed on the day of a wedding! Also, I am very creative and can help with decor, I love playing around with pieces that you want to have together but aren’t quite sure how to lay them out.

Advice you would give to newly engaged couples.
In the grand scheme of things, it’s one day… Of course you want you and your guests to have a great time but remember that the money you spend now, you won’t have later.

        Highlighted Vendor:: Gunpowder n Gloss

Over the past few years,  I have been extremely blessed to get to know wedding vendors.  They are the behind the scenes people that help make a wedding day even more fabulous with their talents and abilities. I have chosen a few vendors turned friends to interview and share more about them, because I think they are so wonderful at what they do!

First off I want to share my wonderful friend and talented make up artist Chris of Gunpowder n Gloss. Chris and I met when I photographers her wedding back in 2014. She now does on-site make up and has a few other business ventures up her sleeve in the next couple months!

I asked her to share more about her business with me!

Describe you business. Rewarding, fun, and life-changing.

How long have you been in business? I have been in business since 2014

Why did you start your business? I decided to start my makeup on location for brides because I have always had a passion for working with bridal clients throughout my cosmetic career ; I love making women feel beautiful in their own makeup style.
Also another large part of my decision to start a business was having my first daughter Kelly Lynn; I wanted the opportunity to have a career and be home with her.

What have weddings taught you? Weddings have taught me to slow down and enjoy the moment, , it goes so fast on your special day!

Describe your style. My style has always been country chic

What is the best thing you have seen on a wedding day? The best thing I saw on someone’s wedding day was the groom wiping away his brides tears at the alter; so touching and sweet!

Where do you find inspiration? Some of my sources of inspiration for my work is my love for the country lifestyle!

What do you do to wind down after a long day if work? I love to wind down after a long day of work with my favorite cocktail in the summer! In the cold winters by the fireplace with some hot tea.

Tell me something more about your business? I have been told I do amazing work, super easy to work with, fun to talk to, and that my team and I are highly professional. I always put my client needs first and always ensure they will be happy with their makeup look.
One thing I do that is important; I walk thru my process for the client; it is nice to make them a part of the application so they don’t feel clueless in what I am doing on their face; clients seem to really appreciate that!

See more of Chris’ work or touch base with her on Facebook or Instagram!
