Minnesota Grown:: Walking forward into the 2017 year

I can not believe that the 2017 year is upon us and like many of you, there are resolutions and ideas that I hope to implement for the upcoming year.  One of the things that I love about Minnesota is the changing seasons. Spring through fall as photographers, we are running like crazy, and the winter, (as cold as it is today… can we say -8!!) forces us to be inside, reflective and s-l-o-w- down.

Thankfully I had the month of December to really think back on what went well and not so well in this past year, and access what I wanted to focus on for this next year.  The more blogs and books I read, the more I see that when I write something down, I am so much more likely to DO those things. And when you have accountability with another person, you are at an even higher point to reach those goals and resolutions! I am unclear on all the stats, so I am not even putting numbers in this post, but know that it was overwhelming! I have seen it true in my own life, and looking back on the 2016 year, I am amazed to see how those goals and aspirations turned into real life actual things.

Some of the things I hoped to accomplish last year helped me to figure out and push forward to know what to look for this year.  Revamping my web-site, creating branding and marketing materials, a wedding magazine, a styled shoot, and x number of weddings and shoots were just a few of the things on my goals list that I crossed off my list and made happen.

Other things, like a newsletter, books I wanted to read, making headway with finances, connecting with vendors, submitting sessions and weddings, and purchasing gear went to the wayside because of a few choices that needed to be made as the year progressed.

Goals and resolutions are things that we aspire to and work toward, but they do not define us or make us who we are.  They can help us to move forward toward tasks, but when life gets in the way, I have learned that it is important to be ok with not reaching or attaining to those goals.

All that said, here are my business goals for the 2017 year and I hope that when I look back on this post the first week of January 2018, I will be able to look back and see these goals reached!

  1. Purchase a new lens
  2. Create a monthly/ if not bi-monthly newsletter
  3. Blog at least 3-5 times a week with one special focus day
  4. Connect social media (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) to those blogs
  5. Photograph another styled wedding shoot
  6. Connect with at least 2-3 other wedding vendors a month
  7. Create social media calendar
  8. Photograph a wedding in another state or country (besides Wisconsin!)
  9. Submit weddings and sessions at the end of each month
  10. Learn more about my camera and attend at least two educational seminars in the world of photography this year
  11. Create some kind of mentor session- (not sure the details of this, and still working through how this would look)
  12. Shoot x amount of weddings, newborns, and family sessions and make x amount per year. (I have this number written down, but feel comfortable not shareing on the internet for personal reasons!)

I have a few other personal goals that I am working toward and will definitely be sharing more as I work toward my goal of blogging more.  What are some of your specific goals for the new year? I can’t wait to hear, and be cheering you on as you move forward in achieving them!

A Year in Review: 2016 weddings

This past year was wonderful for me.  It sums up the 14th (yes 14th!!) of business for me.  I still can not believe that I am daily doing what I love and getting paid to do it.  Photography has been such a great fit for me and I am so very thankful for another year in the books.  2016 was full of beautiful brides and grooms, a trip to Chicago, one on the North Shore, and photographing one of our long time baby-sitters and good friends.  I was at bans and country clubs, and some wonderfully unique venues along the way.  It was about whole heartily connecting to my clients and honoring their photography requests and needs.  Thank you, thank you.  It was a blessed year and I am so very lucky to have been included in many lives and huge events!

January started off with my first wedding of our long time baby-sitter and friend Brittany and Daniel.

Then came April where I met the sweet and kind Tom and Cassie and shot at the beautiful 413 on Wacouta on a gorgeous April day!

May crept on in and on a rainy Memorial Day weekend I celebrated with Kristen and Jake (and met some extremely kind and wonderful people there!)

June rolled in and I was in Excelsior at Bayview (one of my very favorite places to shoot) on one extremely hot day with Taylor and Jenna!

I vacationed in July with my family and then hit it hard in August with a quaint and small ceremony with horses (eek) with Jamie and Kenny in their backyard ceremony and reception.

And Hannah and Michael who had one spectacular summer afternoon!

Fall crept in and I spent Labor Day weekend in St. Cloud with kind and beautiful, Jenny and Matt.

Kelsie and Corey’s beautiful September day was one to remember and heartfelt for me as Kelsie and I have know each other since she was a child.  It was touching to see her marry such a kind and wonderful man!

September ended with a trip to Chicago to photograph Laura and Dan’s oh so amazing wedding.  Every detail in this wedding had me wishing for more time to style and spend time with this kind couple. We also got to reconnect with college friends and time with friends from the area.

October started with a trip up to Grandview to photograph a couple that I know I will be life long friends with.  Alison and Bryan’s wedding day was all they dreamed it to be set on One of Minnesota’s lakes and incredibly beautiful.

The next day I was back in the Cities to shoot a beautiful Vow Renewal and Reception of Camilo and Jenna.

The last wedding of 2016 ended on such a high note when finding a forrest close to the reception area filled with yellow maples.  Completely gorgeous to photograph Nicole and Cole.

Thank you to all the couples, families, friends, and vendors who participated in each day.  It was such an honor to get to know all of you and I look forward to connecting soon.  Stay for the rest of the week when I highlight those 2016 newborns and families I also love so very much!

Cole & Nicole:: Crown Room Wedding

They agreed to meet for dinner.  Cole was incredibly nervous and being on blind dates before he thought that Nicole would be like others he had dated.  He was , and looked around the restaurant for her.  Not knowing what she looked like, he passed a blonde sitting alone in a booth waiting for someone as well.  She watched the man looking all over the room when she realized this could be Cole.  She called his name, and he smiled, came over and the two started dinner.  She was so beautiful that Cole passed by her not realizing his luck.  He told his sister later in a conversation that he couldn’t believe that the beautiful woman sitting alone was actually waiting for him.  Easily talking and spending the evening together, and realizing the two had so many similar interests, the two decided on another date, and eventually a friendship blossomed.

She knew it was coming.  Nicole’s brother had spilled the beans when he was in town, but the actual of when was unsure.  It was a Tuesday night and Cole and Nicole were supposed to be going out to eat with Cole’s sister and her boyfriend, but at the last minute the plans changed.  They met up at Pour in Otsego and through a series of mis-communication, the two chatted through dinner.  Nicole noticed that Cole was emotional and not exactly himself.  The two had dinner than dessert and as they were chatting the ir server came to their table with a bottle of champagne, and Nicole knew it was the moment she had been dreaming about since she was a little girl. Cole was on a knee in the middle of the restaurant asking her to be his wife.

Their October wedding day was filled with joy and laughter and beautiful weather.  Close friends and family celebrated through the day and into the night together as the couple were wed at the Crown Room in Rogers.  Rustic details were dispersed throughout their wedding day.  Everything from the burlap table runners to the succulents in the bouquets to the earrings and necklace that belonged to Nicole’s grandmother were included.  It was a glorious day.  Congratulations Cole and Nicole, you are both amazing people inside and out!

        Absolutely beautiful and so amazing!!!

Jenna & Camilo:: Columbia Manor Wedding

She was touring the world by herself.  Independent and free, the natural born swimmer, turned rower, Jenna, found herself in the country of Colombia.  With its beautiful beaches, she had to row in its waters and it was there that she met Camilo, a rowing coach.  Kind and humorous, she fell for him and began seeing him daily.  The two hit off a friendship and eventually began dating.

With a long commute from one end of the city to the other, and unsafe for a woman, the two decided upon a civil marriage.  Wanting to abide by the country’s laws and customs, Camilo and Jenna, in shorts and t-shirts were married in a court house in Columbia.  Their growing friendship later became love and the two moved to the United States.  Always wanting the fall wedding, they decided on a vow renewal/ larger ceremony in October (because legally they were wed in the United States in May).

It was a glorious fall day; the air was crisp and the leaves were at peak.  The vegan food they both love was incredible, as was Jenna’s grandfather’s song in the middle of their ceremony. The couple joked that they were now pushing for one more ceremony, just to complete the four seasons, but in all reality they threw a great party that I was thrilled to be a part of.

Thank you Camilo and Jenna for allowing me into your beautiful day; it was a joy and honor to celebrate with you!

Bryan & Alison:: Grandview Lodge Wedding

He stepped into the Chicago coffee shop not knowing who he was looking for.  In the corner, he spied a beautiful blonde woman who looked up and waved.  He knew from that minute, that Alison was different than all the rest.  He smiled back, sat down and ordered a latte.  She in turn ordered a mimosa.  The two hit it off, sharing their love of the outdoors and hockey.  One date became many, and then a friendship, and finally a beautiful relationship where eventually Bryan found himself on one knee asking this beautiful woman to be his wife.

Alison and Bryan knew they wanted to have an outdoor ceremony along the waters of the midwest.  Moving back to the Minneapolis area from Chicago, they found themselves drawn to the North Shore and the lakes of Minnesota.  The two eventually decided on Grandview Lodge in Nisswa, Minnesota where their friends and family from out of state could enjoy the picturesque lakes and fall colors, as well as stay a long weekend at a relaxing resort.  Alison wore a Paloma Bridal dress from the Wedding Shoppe in St. Paul while Bryan sported a Joseph Abbound navy suit and bow tie.  Bridesmaids wore navy dresses purchased from David’s Bridal and peach shawls to keep them warm on the brisk fall day.  Gull Lake was perfectly still and scenic as the couple posed with a garden style bouquet from Bloom Designs that contained home grown dahlias, garden roses, astilbe and pepper berry.  Friends and family dined on walleye (a fish local to MN lakes) and different flavored cakes created from Daniela Sutin.

It was one incredible fall day, perfect to capture the essence of October in Minnesota.  Thank you Alison and Bryan for including me in your beautiful wedding day! Many blessings as you walk this new road of marriage!
