    Top 10 decisions I have made for my business (recap!)

    Looking back on the years, there has been a lot that I have learned.  About what to do and what not to do.  Today I want to let you in on some of the top ten decisions I feel I have made for my photography business that have helped it grow and be sustained over the years.  And if you are an aspiring photographer, I hope these tips can help!

    1. Hiring an editor.  Top of my list. Boom, bang. Done and over are the endless hours of editing and frustration as I stare at my computer screen for 30 more hours after a wedding.  This move has saved me time and energy.  I admit there is a bit of a learning curve as you work toward meshing styles and getting the technical side of things down.  At first it was hard to give up the control I thought I needed in the creative process.  But once I let it go, I was thrilled. It is hard for me to even imagine not having an editor anymore, and I wonder why I didn’t do it while my kids were younger.  I have gained hours back to my schedule, alleviated stress (especially in the busy season) and hiring an editor has opened up more opportunity for me to do other things I love doing.  There is a cost involved, but so is the time spent at the computer and away from my family. I was ready to be done with that and gain more hours back into my life with my friends and family!
    2. Hiring a baby-sitter.  While my kids were young and I was at home with them, I hired out a baby-sitter twice a week.  She came to our home and watched the kids, while I spent the day locked away doing the work that needed to be done. Again, it is a cash investment, but it was worth having some days free to do the work that needed to get done and give great customer service to my clients
    3. PhotoMechanic.  My friend and photographer suggested this program to me and it literally has taken hours off my workflow.  If you are not familiar with the program, there is a free trial period of 30 days, and I guarantee you, you will buy it.  It is a culling system where you can easily go through images in minutes.  Pulling up weddings in Lightroom or Photoshop can take f-o-r-e-v-e-r.  This system, not at all.  It is beautiful. I am now able to go through an entire wedding in about 45 minutes or less. You can thank me later.
    4. Hiring a good second shooter. Early in my career, I had my husband helping me (which was fine) but he didn’t understand the technicalities of the day, or care to be at weddings wall day long.  From him, my sister helped as my second shooter which was incredible, as she loved it and was great at it. It was a great way for us to spend time together, but when her career took off, and she could no longer help me, I was on the hunt for a second.  I had some people helping me along the way that were kind people, but either they didn’t have the energy for weddings, or they were enamored with weddings.  I say this in the nicest way, but neither worked for me.  I continued my search  and found three amazing women that already owned their own businesses. Once I hired these photographers, I was floored to see the differing results.  At times it can be a big investment, but I have worked it into my packages and feel confidant that the people that work for me, treat my clients as if they were their own and I am given great results to give my own clients.
    5. Giving back. I choose to do this through a couple of different means. One is by through an organization called Red Thread. This organization specializes in adoption,  something I love with my whole heart. I also choose to give back through silent auctions. Typically these are non-profit organizations and fundraisers that I love and feel inclined to work with. Finding an organization or cause you love will help you also find the clients that you truly love!
    6. Investing in prime lenses. I love my prime lenses I will never go back to a kit lens. I think kit lenses are a great way to learn, but the aperature does not go as low as I would like.  They also provide quality images that can set you apart from the competition.
    7. Being consistent with social media. Over the years social media has changed. When I started my business, blogging was a big deal and really the only way of “free marketing”. I made a commitment to blog every weekday for the entire year. It was a hard challenge, but I saw the results the following year when I began seeing many clients inquiring through my blog. Now there’s Facebook and Instagram and Snapchat and Twitter which are other great “free” services of showcasing your services all over the world. One way to do this is by being consistent on social media. This doesn’t mean you have to be online every minute of the day, it just means you need to be consistent with the number of times you are on social media. It maybe one time a week, it maybe five times a week or maybe five times a day. Whatever it is, commit to some sort of schedule so that the followers you have will continue following you and seeing new content. I know there are times in life where I’ve struggled with being consistent in social media and know that it’s not always doable. But I have seen the results, and continue to move forward in this.
    8. Investing in my clients. One of the ways to gain more clients to is to invest in the ones you already have. One of the ways to do this is by providing excellent customer service as well as proving to them that they are not just a client,  but a friend and a person that you actually care about. Many of my clients over the years have become friends and I’m so blessed to be able to see many of them on a regular basis. This is so rewarding to me as I see relationships being an important aspect in my business.
    9. Creating e-mail templates.  I actually gleaned this idea from Jasmine Star.  Templates can be used in any business practice.  I typically receive the same kinds of e-mails when clients are inquiring about wedding packages, how to prepare for their family or newborn sessions and confirming dates for them.
    10. Taking a day off. Mondays are the day I take off. Not only is this because it is my husband’s day off, but it’s also because after a long weekend of shooting I need a day of rest. Regrouping and getting my home back in order are top priorities!

      Online tools I am using

      If you have been following me at all, you know I love systems and ways to make life easier.  Don’t we all though?

      Today I am going to share with you a few online tools I use that I use that are pretty inexpensive or free to help streamline all the ways I keep up with blogging and social media throughout the months.

      1. Planoly for Instagram– My ALL TIME favorite online system right now. Free or just $9.99/ month I can easily plan out my entire month for blog posts.  It is desktop and mobile compatible, so if you need to be on the go and schedule out your posts, this is a great tool.  I have not really found something I don’t like about it.  If you are looking for a system to see and plan out your Insta posts, start with their free trial and I assure you, you will look no farther!
      2. Facebook Scheduler- Recently I listened to a podcaster who was talking about social media.  Did you know in order for your Facebook posts (at least on business pages!) to be seen, you need to be posting AT LEAST four times per day?  This is so crazy and quite honestly, who has the time to be positing over 4 times a day! Not this girl.  So I started using the Facebook scheduler.  Honestly I know algorithms are all messed up, and I am not even trying to figure them out, but I will tell you, I have been planning out these 4 times/ day and posting them and have seen a trajectory on the up in my insights.  Plus, it has made me go back to previous weddings and sessions I have shot and share more photos.  We shall see how long I can keep this up for, but for the time being, I am really loving these!
      3. Quickbooks– Disclaimer here.  Not free at all, but completely worth the investment.  For someone who hates bookkeeping, I have been using quickbooks for the last few years and finally feel like I am starting to get the hang of it. On my list of to do’s this moth though, is to hand over the bookkeeping side of things to a real live bookkeeper who can easily go online and organize everything.
      4. She Reads Truth– I am LOVING this online Bible reading plan.  I use the app on my phone to keep up with my Bible reading, but also use the desktop version when I sit down at my desk.  There is no reason why I can’t read my Bible on a daily basis without this online tool!
      5. Audiable– Not only am I reading my Bible online, but I have been listening to a few online books this past winter.  My kids have also loved this app and desktop tool, plus we even have it for our kindle, so that wherever we leave off if we are listening in the car, we can pick it back up at home.  This past summer, the kids and I listened to over 20 books and we plan to do the same or more this summer!
      6. Blog Stomp– Need help with blog posts? Pinterest photos? Blog stomp is a great tool to compress the images that you need for your blog posts.  I use this for almost all my posts and I can literally put together an entire wedding post in less than 10 minutes.  Check them out if you are looking for an incredible tool for blogging!
      7. Fundy– Fundy has been my go to album designer.  I love the way that it creates proofs for my clients to view that are in low resolution as also the way it literally creates an album for me in minutes.

        Goal Setting:: Quarter One 2018 Goals

        Back in the very beginning of January, I posted a few blogs about setting goals for the 2018 year.  I bought the 2018 power sheets and have been using them as I can.

        This year I have decided to do quarter goals rather than annual goals because it just seemed a bit smaller and more attainable to look over 3 months rather than 12 months.  So how am I doing?  Read below to see both my personal and business goals.  Black is the goal, red is how I did!

        So Internet, here are my quarter one business goals for 2018:

        • Create systems for the business from start to finish for both my wedding and portrait clients.-DONE!!  I have a PDF created and a loose leaf paper attached to every wedding folder and included in every folder on the computer!
        • Be able outsource all my social media in my busy season and get it to where I want it in the slow season. For quarter 1, I had the time to pull all my social posts together myself.  I have dedicated one day a month to do insta posts and one day a week to pull together content for my Facebook posts and schedule everything out.  I will try this again for quarter 2, and see how it goes and reevaluate at the end to see if I need to hire out for this position.
        • Create content for the blog and social media for the entire year- Unrealistic.  Seriously I think I was being overzealous to finish this.  I was able to go out per quarter with content, and now have posts on the blog calendar through June!  Writing them take way more time than I planned for, so taking a day a month seems a bit easier!
        • Put all 2018 numbers to paper and get the calendar set with sessions, weddings, events and mini sessions- Done!!  I am fully booked with weddings for 2018, and already half way booked for mini’s and regular family sessions!!
        • Change pricing structure and create pricing information to go along with it.  Done!  I am so happy with where I am at.  This only really took a day to go through, but needed to happen!

        My personal goals were a bit worse off.  I failed are more than I would like to admit to, and it is pretty crazy to see how the business can take over! Finding balance has been really hard for me as I am a natural do-er.  Thankfully talking with Kevin has been so helpful in finding that balance.  I am so thankful for my husband!

        • Connect weekly with extended family.  This can with be by text, phone calls, letters, or personal interaction with them.- My sister and I chat once a week on Monday’s (Such a gift!) I still want to connect more and will continue to work at these in quarter 2!
        • Get a regular exercise routine down, and include kids in it- YES!  As it has gotten warmer, I am out walking again!  I connected with a bride turned friend and we are planning on running/ walking 2018 miles for the 2018 year.  She is WAY ahead of me, but I check in weekly and still pushing forward!  This quarter I am adding the 21 day fix back in to my schedule so I am ready to go and feel good for the 2018 wedding season!
        • Create box gardens for my home, plan and build in quarter 1, plant in quarter 2, harvest in quarter 3, evaluate in quarter 4. Working on this one. Pinterest is great, and my inlays are here this weekend, so hopefully we can create a space for these lucious plants!
        • Continue on with my Bible Reading through Studies (She Reads Truth is my favorite now and I just began a study on hospitality that is rocking my world) Loving this app, just got through part of the Lent and will be starting a new study on Timothy!
        • Finish completely re-doing Elise’s room (Painting, new furniture for my almost 11 year old by the end of February!) Done!!  We repainted, but decided to wait on new furniture because we may be putting new carpet into this space.
        • Put together photo books for my family!- Ha, ha.  I have high hopes for myself.  Still woking on getting some together, maybe a yearbook, we shall see.  Fail….
        • Date night once a month with Kevin- If you count in home date nights or out with friends, we nailed this one!

          Goal Setting:: 2018 Business Goals

          As you read the above header, you land in one of the two camps::

          “YAY, I LOVE goal setting, when can we get started and can I bring all my colored markers, and stickers, ideas, and planners to the table”

          OR

          “Please come find me when you are finished.”

          I used to run with the latter camp… like up until 2 years ago.  Really, I am serious. I made all kids of excuses (my kids are too young, I am too old, I’ll never accomplish these goals, my numbers will never be where I want them to be so why even try, can I really do what I am hoping to accomplish, is it realistic enough, but my husband is a pastor, I’m too busy, I don’t have enough time, I am always tired, my kids require too much of me, etc., etc. etc.)

          I have always loved checklists, and could get through my day by crossing daily tasks off, but I never really took the time to look at the big picture of my business or even my life.  I was just getting by.

          It is scary for me to even admit this to the internet, but last year was the first year in my business that I put numbers to paper and set real life goals.  To be fair, I was an art major and had no business background in college. I got married right after graduation and we started our family not long after that.  There wasn’t a whole lot of time to take any business classes or goal setting courses, so everything I have learned on the business side of things has been because I walked through them on my own, or learned by failure.

          In January of 2017, I put numbers to paper, set my goals for 2017 and watched as they were accomplished! Then in October I discovered Power Sheets, and my goal setting life has been dramatically changing! (Thank you Lara Casey and the Cultivate Team)

          Now I run with the first camp, one that I never thought I would be in.  I am now a huge believer in setting intentional, life-giving goals because I have seen things happen last year that I want to see happen at an even deeper level this year.  Instead of making the goals an annual thing, I love that my Power Sheets give me the option to reevaluate my goals quarterly to see if they are realistic and form to my life! Already since I have started, I have decided to change what some of them are because I don’t feel right about going in a certain direction!

          So Internet, here are my quarter one business goals for 2018:
