Happy 4th of July!

I absolutely love the 4th of July! It brings back so many sweet memories of my Grandma. My dad grew up in rural Illinois and we only got to see my Grandma once a year and it was always over the 4th of July. Early in the morning, we would wake up strudels and donuts, followed by a day of swimming at a friend’s home. A big dinner of grilling hamburgers and hot dogs would follow our swimming festivities.

Their small town of West Frankfort would host a band concert in their small town park pavilion. We’d pop a giant bag of popcorn, load up blankets, lawn chairs, bug spray and sparklers and head to the park. The local band would play show tunes (in which my grandma would always sing along and wave her American flag), patriotic songs, and the last song would be The Star Spangled Banner. As the fireworks lit up the sky we would ohh and ahhh.

I am so thankful for these incredible memories with my Grandma. She’s been gone for almost 20 years, but the 4th of July always brings me back to being 10 years old, rolling and laughing in the grass with my sisters, listening proudly to my uncle belt God Bless America on his clarinet, and walking hand in hand with my grandma as we headed home.

May the memories of this holiday be sweet as you celebrate this great country we get to call home.

    Why I love Online meetings

Technology is a beautiful thing, and I love using it in business.  If this last year has taught me anything, it’s that online meetings are just as productive as in person meetings. One thing I am loving a lot these days are online meetings and here are 3 reasons why!

    1. It’s a time saver.  As much as I love meeting client in person and seeing right in front of me how a couple interacts, I also LOVE the ease and comfort of ducking into my office, closing the door and jumping on a call. No drive time required for anyone, and let’s face it, sometimes it is just hard to find time in our busy lives to put a meeting on the calendar and then GET there!
    2. I can connect with couples all over the world.  This past month alone, I scheduled meeting times with clients in Texas, Chicago and DC, and just a few hours away.  Never before in history have we been able to do this, and I think its pretty amazing.
    3. Sweats and leggings are ok.  Typically when I am headed out to a meeting, I do dress in work attire, but when I’m sitting at home, there is the comfort and ease of pulling on a nice shirt and just keeping my leggings on!

Don’t get me wrong, I am still a huge advocate for in person meetings, and if you are in the Cities, I’d love to take you out for coffee, but there are those times its not always an option. So weather a Skype meeting, FaceTime meeting, Zoom or Messenger meeting, I am all for them! Hope to connect with you soon!

Five things you might not know about me

Happy Friday to you! Thanks for dropping by the blog today! I know there are about a thousand different places you could be right now, so thanks for taking a little time here! Amongst all that is going on in the world, I am choosing today to take a break, breath in deep and just be me. So here are a few things you may or may not know about me….

      1. I am not a Sushi fan. Friends have tried and tried me to like it, and I have give in on some occasions, but the idea of seafood in my mouth disgusts me.
      2. I love online shopping, unless I am at TJ MAXX/ Home Goods. I so wish I could wander the stores, but it bores me to death. (My daughter can attest to this!) I am hardwired to be a do-er and there has to be a purpose for things, like shopping. So I kinda don’t like it and get a lot done online! However there is one exception to the rule, and that is TJ MAXX and Home Goods. I have no idea why, but it is pretty typical that you will find me there (of course when it re-opens!) scoring amazing deals and strolling through the aisles.
      3. Marco Polo is my new jam and I am totally a Karen (and somebody tell me how this became a thing?) when it comes to SnapChat.
      4. I ran cross country/ track and cross country skied all through high school. When 2:30 still rolls around I get anxious to work out and still do. It doesn’t always include running, but you can typically find me working out then!
      5. I had my first daughter when I was 25, my mom had me when she was 25, and my grandma had my mom at 25. If I played the lottery, I am pretty sure 25 might be one of my winning numbers!

Now you go, tell me something I might not know about you!

How I am using Social Media in a Pandemic… for the good

These days navigating social media can be tough. With anxieties high for those laid off work or not getting work, having stay at home orders extended, distance learning taking up more time than we’d like, social media can heighten all the feelings we’d (I’d?!) rather not have to feel.

In recent days, I have limited myself to only being on social media at certain points of the day and taking Sunday’s off. For this 100 percent self employed girl, social media can also be a place where I feel frustrated and disheartened as I watch people berate one another and throw words around like swords just to get their point across.

Is this really what we as a culture need? I’m not really convinced we do.

All that said, I believe we can be strong for one another, encourage one another and build one another up. All it takes is a kind word and noticing someone. If we can’t be together physically, why not bring encouragement to others virtually. Instead of scrolling these days, I am really challenging myself to connect with people as people. And when I get on social media, I have a goal and a purpose so that I am not overtaken with fear or frustration.

Here’s my small and free plan. I hope it can be encouraging to you and bring joy to those you interact with throughout your time on social media.

        1. Connect and comment on at least 20 different pages per day
        2. Highlight vendors and clients three times weekly on my social pages
        3. Leave reviews and shout-outs for small business and restaurants I love

It’s not a lot, but I hope vendors, clients, and small businesses feel seen and loved though this time because, we really are all in this together.

Five things that might surprise you about me!

          1. I am a list maker and hand write everything mostly so I can remember things! Yes, I wrote this blog post!
          2. I knew I wanted to be a photographer since I was 14 years old and pursued photography throughout high school and college… I am pretty determined
          3. I used to hate camping (with a passion!) but now I don’t mind it. Years of being married to my adventurous outdoorsy husband has helped!
          4. My summer bucket list has always included a trip to Noah’s Ark in Wisconsin Dells.
          5. I hate, hate, hate getting my picture taken, so I can completely relate to you not wanting your photo taken. After years of having it done, and having people push me to be more on social media, I have become more ok with who I am and being photographed!
