Choosing the right location for your family session can completely shape the look and feel of your photos. Living and photographing in Minnesota means we get the beauty of all four seasons and each one brings its own magic.
If you’re planning a 2026 family session, here are my four favorite locations, one for each season, that consistently deliver stunning, meaningful images.
Spring in Minnesota is something special, and there’s no better place to capture it than the Lake Harriet Rose Garden in Minneapolis.
This location comes alive with:
Apple blossoms and crabapple tree blooms
Tulips and lilacs
Lush greenery and vibrant florals
Not only does it look beautiful, but it smells incredible too—which makes your session feel like a full sensory experience. The variety of textures and colors creates soft, romantic backdrops that are perfect for families with young kids or anyone wanting that fresh, light-filled spring look.
If you’re searching for spring family photos in Minneapolis or flower-filled photo locations in Minnesota, this is one of the best spots.
Summer sessions in downtown Wayzata are everything you want Minnesota to feel like.
Right along Lake Minnetonka, this location offers so much variety in one session:
Sandy beach vibes
Boardwalk and marina views
Green spaces and flowers
Charming downtown textures
It’s perfect for families who want a relaxed, playful session that captures real moments; kids running barefoot, parents soaking in the sunshine, and that golden summer glow.
If you’re looking for Lake Minnetonka family photos or a Minnesota summer beach session, Wayzata is always a favorite.
You get a mix of historic architecture and cozy winter charm.
From December through March, the park is filled with twinkling lights, creating a beautiful backdrop whether:
Fresh snow is falling
The ground is lightly covered
Or even during those in-between melt days
The sun reflects off the buildings in the most stunning way, and there’s even the option to step inside the Landmark Center (with a photo pass) for added variety.
If you’re considering winter family photos in St. Paul or a downtown Minnesota holiday session, this location is hard to beat.

There is something so incredibly special about welcoming a new baby into your home and getting to document those first days as your family grows.
Recently, I had the joy of photographing Brittany and Forest as they welcomed their newborn baby girl into the world, alongside their sweet (and busy!) two-year-old son. Their session was filled with cozy snuggles, toddler giggles, and those beautifully real in-between moments that make lifestyle newborn photography so meaningful.
If you’re expecting or recently welcomed a baby and live in Maple Grove, Plymouth, Wayzata, or Minnetonka, this post will help you feel fully prepared for your own in-home newborn session.
Why Choose a Lifestyle Newborn Session?
Lifestyle newborn photography focuses on connection over perfection. Instead of stiff poses or heavy props, we capture your family just as you are snuggled on the couch, rocking your baby in the nursery, or soaking in those quiet moments together.
These sessions take place in the comfort of your home, making it easier for parents (and especially siblings!) to feel relaxed.
6 Tips to Prepare for Your Newborn Session
1. Schedule Within the First 14 Days
The ideal time for newborn photos is within the first two weeks after birth. Babies are still in that sleepy, snuggly stage and tend to curl up naturally.
To make things flexible, I typically schedule two tentative dates—one before your due date and one after so we can adjust once baby arrives.
2. Keep Your Home Warm & Cozy
A warm home helps your baby stay sleepy and comfortable throughout the session.
I recommend setting your thermostat to around 78–80 degrees, and I often bring a small heater to keep the shooting space extra cozy. Remember your baby just came from a very warm environment, so this makes a big difference!
3. Follow Baby’s Lead
Newborn sessions are completely baby-led.
Feeding breaks, diaper changes, soothing these are all expected and built into our time together. There’s no need to feel rushed. Some of the most meaningful images happen during these natural moments.
4. Keep Props Simple & Meaningful
I take a minimal, natural approach to props. I’ll bring a selection of neutral blankets and textures, but you’re always welcome to include:
A special blanket
A meaningful outfit
Headbands or simple accessories
Family heirlooms
Simple always photographs beautifully and keeps the focus on your baby.
5. Preparing Siblings (Especially Toddlers!)
Including siblings—especially toddlers like Brittany & Forest’s son—adds so much personality to your session.
A few tips:
Plan around nap time
Have snacks ready
Keep expectations relaxed
Let them come and go naturally
Morning sessions (around 9–10am) tend to work best for young children.
6. Let the Light In
Natural light is everything in lifestyle photography.
We’ll typically use spaces near windows like your living room, bedroom, or nursery. You don’t need a perfectly styled home, but if you can clear a small area near a window, it’s helpful.
Newborn Photography for Maple Grove Area Families
If you’re located in Maple Grove, Plymouth, Wayzata, Minnetonka, or surrounding Twin Cities suburbs, I would love to document this incredibly special season for your family.
These early days go by so quickly but the photos will bring you right back to the feeling of holding your baby in your arms.

Congratulations on your engagement! You’ve said “yes,” put the ring on your finger, and now you’re entering one of the most exciting chapters of your life. As a wedding photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing countless love stories, and one thing I always tell my couples is that the engagement period is just as magical as the wedding day itself. It’s full of anticipation, excitement, and, of course, beautiful moments that you’ll want to cherish forever.
But once the initial excitement settles, the big question is: What do you do next? There are so many things to think about as you prepare for your wedding, but there are also small, meaningful steps that can help you enjoy the moment and set the tone for your upcoming wedding journey.
So from my perspective as a wedding photographer, here are the top 5 things you should do after getting engaged to make sure this time is unforgettable—and to help you capture every precious moment along the way.
1. Share the News with Family and Friends (But First, Celebrate the Moment!)
This is your time to bask in the joy of the moment before everything starts moving so quickly. Of course, you’ll want to share the news with your family and friends, but before you post that big engagement photo on Instagram, take a step back and enjoy your engagement just between the two of you (and maybe your closest family members).
Whether it’s an intimate celebration with your partner or a phone call to the people you love most, cherish those first moments when you get to tell your story. When you’re ready to share, post your engagement announcement with a heartfelt caption that reflects who you are as a couple.
Pro tip:Tag your partner and use a fun or meaningful hashtag (think #FederEngaged or #Engagedto(Partner’s Name) to start tracking all of your beautiful moments from now until your wedding day. This can be a special way to look back on everything as your big day approaches!
2. Update Your Social Media Profiles to Reflect Your New Status
After you’ve shared your news, take a moment to update your social media profiles. Change your profile picture to one that captures the excitement of this new chapter—whether it’s the moment right after the proposal or a sweet selfie with your partner. It’s the little details that count.
For many couples, this is also a good time to update your Instagram bio or Snap Chat description to reflect your engagement. I love seeing couples embrace their new status with captions like “Engaged to my forever” or something playful that reflects their personalities.
Pro tip: Don’t forget to includelinks to your wedding websiteif you have one, or at least a link to your engagement shoot gallery. It’s a great way to keep your followers and friends updated!
3. Document Your Engagement—The Photos Matter!
One of the most exciting things about being engaged is the chance to have beautiful photos that mark this moment in your relationship. If you’re planning an engagement session with a photographer (and I hope you do!), now’s the time to get it on the calendar! As a wedding photographer myself, I can’t stress enough how important it is to document this time in your life, as it’s so special.
You’ll cherish these images forever, whether they’re framed in your home or used for save-the-date cards, your wedding website, or even Instagram posts.
But even before the official engagement shoot, consider taking photos on the day of your proposal! The joy and emotion captured in those moments are priceless, and those raw feelings will stay with you forever.
Pro tip: When planning your engagement shoot, choose a location that’s meaningful to both of you—whether it’s where you first met, a favorite date spot, or somewhere that just feels you. Think of it as a date you would love to go on, and just add me! Your photos will be that much more special!
4. Create Your Wedding Website—Start Organizing, and hire a planner!
Your wedding website is where all the important details come together, and it’s the perfect place to start organizing your big day. From your engagement story to your wedding date, venue, and travel info for out-of-town guests, this is the spot where you can keep everyone informed.
I always recommend couples create a wedding website early on, even before the invitations go out. It’ll save you tons of time later and allow guests to RSVP, check out your registry, and get excited about your wedding day.
Plus, a well-organized site is an excellent way to build your online presence and keep your friends and family updated. If you need help creating a wedding website, platforms like Zola, The Knot, and Wix offer easy-to-use templates that will make the process a breeze.
Pro tip: If you’re sharing budget allows, my biggest tip is HIRE A PLANNER!! I promise they will be worth every penny you spend. One of my favorite teams is Jenna Culley Events. The day goes smoother, you have to think about less and they are perfect for gathering all the details to make your day perfect for you!
5. Set Up Your Wedding Registry
Once you’ve shared the news and started planning, don’t forget to set up your wedding registry. This is one of the first practical steps in the wedding planning process, and it’s a great way to get organized early on.
Many couples opt for online registries through sites like Amazon, Target, or Crate & Barrel. These registries allow you to curate everything you need (or want!) for your new life together. Plus, it makes gift-giving easy for your guests. Make sure to add a variety of price points, and don’t forget to share the link with your friends and family via your wedding website or social media.
Pro tip: Keep in mind that many guests will appreciate knowing your style, preferences, and what you need most, so be sure to personalize your registry with thoughtful descriptions.
Final Thoughts
This is just the beginning of your beautiful engagement journey! While there are so many things to think about in the months leading up to your wedding day, I hope this list has given you some helpful pointers on how to make the most of this exciting time. As a photographer, I believe in the power of preserving memories—so make sure to capture every moment, from the proposal to the last dance at your wedding.

As the golden hour descended upon Minnehaha Falls in Minneapolis, Mariah and Jack found themselves enveloped in a moment that whispered promises of forever. Their early spring engagement session was not just a celebration of their love, but a testament to the beautiful journey that brought them together.
Their love story began at Lakeville North High School, where the two both attended. One evening as the two were both attending a concert at The Garage in Burnsville with mutual friends, Mariah accidentally caught Jack’s eye and sparked the first flicker of connection as they both were singing Britney Spears’ iconic “Baby One More Time”. After the song ended the two laughed and Mariah took the first step to introduce herself to Jack.
The magic continued to weave its spell during a memorable vacation in Lake of the Woods, Canada. Jack, with a carefully crafted plan, whisked Mariah away to Wickhem’s Island, a small island that has been in Jack’s family for generations. Under the guise of a family photoshoot, Jack led Mariah to the island, where suspicions of a proposal danced in her mind. Yet, it was Jack’s borrowed shirt from his brother that he wore for “photos” that threw her off the scent. It wasn’t until he knelt down on one knee on the island that Mariah knew her suspicions were correct, and she was overjoyed.
Fast forward to the present, where the warm hues of the golden hour mirrored the glow of their love at Minnehaha Falls. Against the backdrop of cascading waterfalls and nature’s spring buds, their engagement session captured the essence of their journey—from chance encounters to cherished moments that led to this chapter of commitment.
Looking ahead, their love story unfolds with promises of a mid-June wedding at the enchanting Little Log House Pioneer Village in Hastings. Surrounded by history and rustic charm, their union promises to be nothing short of spectacular, a culmination of love’s journey against the backdrop of time-honored traditions and cherished beginnings.
I can’t wait to celebrate with them in just a few short weeks!! Congratulations!
On a radiant April day, love filled the air as Alex and Maria exchanged vows at the Hilton in St. Louis Park, MN. The urban landscape provided a stunning backdrop, perfectly complementing the joyous occasion. From emotional first looks to a stunning golden hour, this wedding was a beautiful celebration of love and happiness.
The day began with excitement as the bridesmaids giggled and rolled down the hallways in carts, creating unforgettable memories while the groomsmen toasted and cheered for Alex as he got ready. With the talented team from Taylor Marie Beauty taking care of hair and makeup, Maria and her bridesmaids were a vision of elegance and grace in their stunning dusty blue Azazie dresses.
The first look moments were truly emotional. Maria was helped into her elegant dress purchased at the Wedding Shoppe in St. Paulby her mother, and then went to meet her father for their first look. As she stepped out to meet Alex, looking dapper in his dark suit from Knights of Chamber, the love and anticipation were palpable. Love, joy, and excitement radiated from the couple as they prepared to embark on their new chapter together.
Along with the stunning wedding party, Maria and Alex took to the streets around the West End, where cheers and well-wishes followed them. We had so much fun enjoying the beautiful day and walking the streets of St. Louis Park where spring was truly in the air. Megan Charlton of Blooma by Design had crafted stunning spring floral arrangements with pops of yellow tulips, ferns, and white roses that added a touch of natural beauty to the urban setting.
Family then joined us for photos at the Hilton, and guests began arriving to start the celebration of Maria and Alex. The two exchanged heartfelt vows, promising lifelong love and support as Alex’s father wed the two. With rings from Shane Co, they sealed their commitment in a deeply emotional and touching kiss, surrounded by loved ones.
The evening was filled with laughter and joy which began in speeches and toasts by the bride and groom’s fathers, maid of honor and best man. The Hilton then provided a delectable meal that delighted the guests’ taste buds and Nothing Bundt Cakesand Key’s Cafe brought in sweet treats for guests to enjoy. The celebration continued thanks to the lively tunes spun by Mark Haugen. The daddy daughter choreographed dance was a hit and started off the party! Every moment was captured beautifully among the beautiful linens and decor by We’ve Got it Covered, ensuring that the memories of this special day will be cherished for years to come. At the end of the night we headed to a spot overlooking downtown Minneapolis for some beautiful sunset photos to remember this incredible day. This was not just a wedding; it was a celebration of love, friendship, and the beginning of a beautiful journey together.
Many blessings to you Alex and Maria!! Have a wonderful honeymoon celebrating in Disney World, and on the beautiful beaches of Florida!
Katie Nick’s June wedding at Seven Vines Vineyard was the perfect blend of timeless elegance and joyful celebration. From the classic black-and-white wedding party attire to the dreamy golden hour portraits among the vines, every detail felt effortlessly sophisticated.
Surrounded by their favorite people and endless love, these two kicked off married life in the most beautiful way.
Baby Mary has arrived and is already so deeply loved by Nicole and Aaron.
I’ve had the true honor of photographing this family since their oldest was born over 16 years ago, and watching their story grow through each new season has been something really special. From newborn snuggles to busy, full family life being invited back again and again is something I never take for granted.
This family is deeply rooted in the world of forage, county fairs, and raising and showing lambs and sheep, so it only felt fitting to include a little lamb hat for baby Mary’s first photos. A small nod to a big part of their life and traditions.
Rob and Sarah’s wedding day was a beautiful blend of faith, family, and thoughtful design. Inspired by Monet’s garden paintings, their celebration was filled with soft spring colors, meaningful heirlooms, and intentional details at every turn.
After a joyful ceremony at Eagle Brook Church, surrounded by family and friends, they celebrated the night away at Silverwood Park with beautiful florals, heartfelt speeches, lakeside portraits, and dancing.
One of my favorite details? Sarah changed into her mother’s wedding dress for the reception, while flowers made from that same gown were sewn into her veil.
Welcome, to the world sweet Julia! It was such a blessing to see Travis, Marisa, and Jalen again! What joy Julia has brought to this family! Congratulations!!
