Top five things I’m afraid to tell you

1) I still freak out a little

Even though I have been shooting weddings for years, I still get those butterflies every wedding I shoot because I know what a big deal it is for coupes to allow me into this incredible once in a lifetime day.  I know that the adrenaline rush is a good thing because it keeps me focused and on track.  I also feel like it actually makes me work harder!  So much so that sometimes during the day I forget to eat and don’t realize it until I sit down to dinner and realize how ravishingly hungry I am!

2) I would love to hold your newborn.

When I do a newborn session I really love holding your baby.  Please don’t freak out at all, and it will never be something I ask of you (unless maybe I do..) but I really do love babies. Plus it gives me that baby fix I need to keep me from wanting another.  Having almost three tweens in my home, I don’t get as much time to hold babies.  So just let me.  I promise I will love it!

3) There are days I doubt myself.

Often times, especially during the slow season when I am able to look around me, I am ready to throw in the towel.  I often find myself comparing. When I look around to all the amazing and incredible photographers in the Twin Cities area, there are days I feel like I can’t measure up.  I know this is not true and I’m not asking for accolades, but I want you to know that if you struggle with comparison, you are not alone at all. On days like this, I have a friend that I confide in and I have found that it’s best for me to shut off all social platforms.

4) I remember names and people.

Seriously, this can be a little freaky to some people. Even if we have met for a short time, I will probably remember you. Maybe not your name, but your face for sure! I blame it all on social media and the hours of editing after a wedding looking at faces!

In this crazy world where we can see other peoples lives on social platforms, I know I remember people and what is going on in their lives even if they don’t know me!  Recently at a networking event, I started talking to someone that I thought I had met before!  We had only talked through social platforms and half way through the conversation (she was so gracious!) she asked me politely who I was and how I knew her. (You can imagine my embarrassment!) So if I come up to you and start talking like we are BFF’s, and you have no idea who I am, you have complete permission to interrupt me and tell me we have never met in real life!

5) I honestly, truly do love my job.

I’m not really scared to tell you this, but I feel like I should! Almost without a doubt there is someone on a wedding day that will come up to me and ask me if I really love my job.  I’m not really sure what they are expecting me to say, but let me answer this question so you don’t have to ask it.  I really, really do.

Nate and Marisa:: Minneapolis Engagement Session

    The Stone Arch Bridge.

Iconic of Minneapolis and a beautiful place for engagement photos.  Getting there on a cold day where nothing is happening downtown is even better!  Less people to deal with and a completely free bridge and downtown area to walk around!

For Marisa and Nate, this was the perfect day!  They brought along their pooch and together we explored our favorite city!  I simply can not wait to photograph their November wedding, who knows, we may get a day just like this one, or one with temps in the 60’s!  Either way, I can not wait to document their day… you may also see their pooch making a debut there too!

      New Beginning Styled Shoot

The inspiration for this styled shoot started with the Pantone Color of the Year – Greenery and new beginnings. Weddings are definitely a new beginning for couples – starting your life as a team, looking forward to the future and the growth that goes with that. Along with the greenery came the idea of a springtime backdrop for a wedding in Excelsior, MN – a town that really comes alive in the spring and gets really lively during the summer!

It was the perfect location for such a shoot. Pique Travel provides a historic look at the small town, giving lots of natural colors and details. The wood from Lyman Lumber built in the 1940’s provided a warm but urban feel.  All the touches from the original metal rooftop, wood floors and rolling buffet were brought in to make the whole building feel cohesive. Using local vendors was a must, as each of the creative spirits from around the small town brought their own artistic abilities to the collaboration.

Wedding Vendors I love working with!

Today I thought I might put together a list of vendors that come to mind that I frequently refer.  This is just a small list of people I know personally and have rubbed shoulders with throughout the year. Because there are SO many great wedding vendors in our great state of Minnesota, please know that this is just a small list!

If you are looking for specific vendors, I always post them at the end of each wedding I shoot, so feel free to look there if you need more, or love the wedding and want to see more of that specific item!

Why I come early to a wedding!

When I meet with my wedding clients, I always tell them I will come at least an hour early to their wedding day and not charge them for it. Why would I do this? Isn’t my time worth anything? Yes, it is, and I have found over the years of shooting there’s a good reason to come early.

When I get to the wedding venue early, I typically check out the lighting for the day.  Is it sunny? Cloudy? Rainy? Is there an overhang, is there a place that is cool? Is there a mud? Is there a place for the bride to stand without squinting? Is there a space large enough for the wedding party? All these questions need to be answered  and sometimes they can’t be until the day of the wedding.

I also come early to set up any gear and take a look at the ceremony spot before all the guests arrive.  This allows me to see the front  and back of the space I’m in.

Coming early also helps me to connect with other vendors so that I can put a name to a face,  as well as shoot details of the dress, shoes, stationary and other details without feeling rushed.  I can also meet members of the wedding party and the parents.

Because I want the photography timeline that the couple and I have worked out to stay in tact, coming early allows me to let other vendors know who are on site, (for example the make up artist for hair stylist) know that the next portion of the day is about to start.

Just a few tips as to why to come early for the day!
