Rochester Winter Wedding:: Laura and Evin

Would you rather…

Get married on a beach or in the middle of winter in Rochester?  Laura and Evin chose the latter, and it is a game that this sweet couple played when they first started dating and still play when they need a good laugh!  The two met at Crossroads College in Rochester while Laura was working in the housing space on campus and Evin showed up as a renter and noticed the pretty brunette right away.  She knew he was a great renter, but wasn’t after a relationship. Two years later Evin finally gathered his nerve when the two were paired for a work project and he finally asked her out!

After dating for a year or so, Evin knew he wanted to ask Laura to be his wife.  They were on vacation at a cabin up north with Laura’s family.  After going out for pizza, Evin took Laura out for a boat ride to watch the sunset. As they neared the center of the lake, Evin asked Laura to light a firework and throw it up.  She was a little baffled by the question as they were enjoying a nice romantic boat ride, but did as he asked and when she turned around from throwing it up, found Evin on one knee with a ring in one hand and his phone in the other asking her to marry him!

Their February wedding day was absolutely perfect.  A fresh blanket of snow fell in the morning hours followed by filtered light in the afternoon to a beautiful sunset in the evening. Warming up just enough to bear the cold, we all headed to Essex Park in Rochester for outdoor photos.  Laura looked incredible in her custom made Azdress white gown and hair piece from Lo & Behold while her bridesmaids stayed warm and beautiful in their emerald green dresses from David’s Bridal in Rochester. The dried florals from The Posey Shop  (a brilliant idea for outdoor winter weddings in MN!) were a perfect pop of pinks against the gowns.  Evin wore a tweed dark brown suit jacket from Studio Suites, perfect to stay warm in the winter weather and his groomsmen looked stunning in the brown sweaters, gold ties and plaid emerald and navy scarves.  They sported their wintery boutonnieres from Which Goose.  Laura and Evin created their invitations from Vista Print and held their ceremony and reception at their home church of Mercy Hill.  Because the couple doesn’t care much for dancing, they decided to incorporate an improv comedy act for their guests after dinner of which many were entertained.

Laura and Evin, your wedding day was amazing.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart for asking me to document it for you, I am thrilled that you found one another and wish you both many blessings as you begin your life together!

How to put together your wedding day time line

One of the very first questions I receive in a wedding consultation is

How much time do I need for photos on my wedding day?

Knowing how long and when photos are to take place sets up most of the other vendors for the day and knowing how to put this together can help tremendously and alleviate lots of stress when meeting with other vendors and figuring out how your day might look.

Typically when I get this question, there are a few other questions that I usually have for the couple:
What time is your wedding at?
    How long is your ceremony?
Will you be doing a first look, or do you plan on not seeing each other before the ceremony?
How large is your wedding party?
What photos are most important to you?
Do you want to go to an alternate location between the ceremony and reception?

From here, we can start setting up the time line of the day.  So to give you an example say you have a 4:00 wedding, the ceremony is 30 minutes long, you are planning on seeing each other beforehand for the first look, want an alternate location and have an average wedding party of 10 attendants and the photos of you and your spouse are of utmost importance.

Knowing all this information, I would advise you on booking a 10 hour day and the time line would look like this:

1:00- Wedding party to arrive at getting ready location, detail shots, finishing touches shots
1:30-First look with bride and groom, photos together
    2:00- Wedding Party photos
2:30- Bride’s family photo (add in grandparents and other extended family)
3:00- Groom’s family photo (add in grandparents and other extended family)
    3:30- Prep/ hide for ceremony
    4:00- Ceremony Begins
    4:30- Ceremony ends/ greet guests
5:00- Head to alternate location in transportation
7:00- Announcement of bride and groom
7:15 Dinner served/ Cake cutting/ Sunset photos of Bride and Groom/ Toasts
    8:30- Dance begins- Reception candids
    11:00 End of contract

Hope that helps in your planning!

Zach and Maria:: Winter wonderland wedding

When Maria took a job lifeguarding at the YMCA she never dreamed she would meet the man she would marry. Dark hair, blue eyes and being a lifeguard, Maria noticed Zach right away. As they began talking, they realized they had a lot in common; their love for the Lord, dogs, the water, family, and swing dancing.

After a few years of dating, Zach knew he was ready to propose. He drove to Bismarck where Mario was in school and surprised her one Friday night in the chapel where he got down on one knee and asked Maria to be his wife.  She was completely stunned and surprised and said yes right away!

Their February wedding day was a winter bliss! It was beautiful, crisp and the sun was shining. I honestly could not get enough of Maria’s Allure romance BLUSH dress. It was so fitting for the season while her wintery wedding greens by Divine Blooms stood out adding a beautiful array of texture and elegance. The bridesmaids navy Azlnzinns Papell dresses from Macy’s paired well with the rose colored wraps they used to keep warm in. The men stayed warm in their tweed vests with blue shirts. Maria glowed throughout the day and as she interacted with guests with makeup and hair done by JB Carour in New Brighton.  Her solitaire rose gold band and diamond by Kay Jewelers sparkled and shined throughout the day. Chef Jeff provided tasty and exquisite food for all the guests while a the wedding party seat at a rustic barn wood table from Apres.  A family friend baked rich bark themed rustic wedding cake for the couple and guests to share. Instant Request brought the house down as friends and family wrapped up the night with dancing and celebration while Lisa Murphy made sure that the entire wedding day went off without a hitch, which it did!

Zack and Maria it was an honor to be able to share your day with you and I hope our paths cross again in the near future and have a wonderful time in the Bahamas!! Congratulations again!

Mike and Molly:: Centennial Lakes Engagement Session

It was clear that when I met Mike and Molly I knew we would get along well.  Free flowing conversation, talk of loving summer and all around kind people, their winter engagement session was another indication of how well we got along.  They brought their sweet little Corkie, Fulton, and he only added to the fun of their winter engagement session.  I simply can not wait to see them again in August when it will be nice and HOT and we won’t be scrambling to get back into warm coats!!

How to shoot wedding details quickly

One of my very favorite parts of the wedding day is gathering all the details and taking some time to photograph them to add to the storyline of the day in the album or for my blog posts.  Typically I allow for 30-40 minutes of shooting, but many times I can be in a crunch.  So what to do when you are in a pinch with time and how do you shoot those details quickly? Today I have some tips for you!

          1. Plan ahead!  Connect with the bride a week in advance and have her put together a bag that will contain her shoes, jewelry, stationary, hanky, veil, flowers, perfume, and any other details that she wants photographed.  I typically will have a personal attendant or family member meet me at the location where the ladies are getting dressed to have her bring along the dress and rings.
          2. Find a neutral location that is well lit.  Windows can be your best friend when shooting details.  I will typically grab a chair and use the dress or veil as a backdrop.  Wood or concrete floors can also be awesome to use as the backdrop as can textured chairs or benches.
          3. Have an assistant or family member help you.  If that personal attendant or family member that brought you the details is still available, put her to use.  Have her hold the dress, bring in flowers, pull out stationary and be another hand to help arrange details.
          4. Start big, then go small!  To ensure I get all the details that a bride asks for, I start with a photo of all the details together, and then do each object alone or with another item!
          5. Don’t forget about the men! Shoes, watches, flasks, cigars, tie clips, socks, rings, boutonniere’s, etc can all be photographed and are just as important to the day!
          6. Use the timer on your phone. Often I can get caught up in this part of the day because I love all the pretty little details! I typically allow for this time in my time line, but I still need to remind myself that the timeline must continue and by setting a timer on my phone, I am able to keep myself on time!

Do you have any tips and tricks you have learned along the way?  I would love to hear them!!
