My Favorite pod-casts

I might be a bit behind in the game, but this year I have taken to podcasts like they are my best friend.  Instead of listening to music when I work, I have noticed more and more I will turn on my podcasts. Ranging from business tools and strategies, to sermons, to everyday life, I love these.  Right now this is what my pocast bar looks like::

What are your favorites??! Seriously, I’d love to find one for my kids, or selfishly more for myself!

Ten (more) things you might not know about me

Happy Wednesday to you! I’m so happy that summer is almost here (only 12 days away, but who’s counting?!).  Today I am going to piggy back on a post I did in February.  So here goes, 10 (more) things you might not know about me.

    1. I am the oldest of three girls. I love my sister’s dearly, and talk with them at least once a week.
    2. I hate anything grape flavored, but I love grapes… and wine.
    3. I rarely watch TV or the news, but when I do, it is typically with Kevin or another episode of The Office or Gilmore Girls.
    4. I only take photos of my own kids with my iPhone.  They really dislike it when I take out my big camera, so I plan on getting our family photos taken at least once a year.
    5. Besides raining the entire day of my wedding, our cake ended up not working so well (for lack of better terms). A gracious friend of my mom’s, tried to cover it up with flowers, but I’m not sure it really worked…  Honestly I don’t even remember the way it looked and it’s a great story to tell almost 15 years later. (Photo is below for your enjoyment!)
    6.  The last book I read was The Help, and that was when I was on vacation back in March.  I have not picked up a book since, but am trying really hard to get through the 10 books I wanted to read for the year.
    7. My favorite place to vacation is anywhere warm.
    8. I am running a 10K this August with a friend of mine, training has now begun.  Feel free to check my insta stories on what I’m doing to train, just a HINT!
    9. I don’t have a favorite color.  I just like all of them.  My kids ask me frequently what it is, and honestly it really depends on my mood that day, sorry.
    10. I hate clutter, so often times I become a stuffer.  I stuff things in drawers just to get them out of sight, leaving for not so great organization and really messy drawers!

So what about you?  Please let me know, I’d love to hear YOUR favorite color, the best book you are reading, or your best wedding story!!

**Mere babies married in the age before digital photography (thank goodness for “proofs”), and bonus points if you can find the cake!**

What details should you bring to the wedding day?

As I have mentioned in past blogs, one of the rings I love doing from my clients is coming early to their wedding day to photograph the details.  The though behind this, for me, is that I love being able to have extra time to photograph the details of the day because I want to try to get each wedding I shoot published somewhere and most of the time editors are looking for lots of detail shots to help tell the story of the day.  Without going into much of the couple’s time for photos, I have found this to be a win-win situation for both of us.

So along those lines, what details should you bring on your wedding day for me to photograph during that portion of the day? The most obvious things are the dress, your shoes, your jewelry, your rings, invitation suite (if you haven’t mailed it to me yet!), the bridesmaid dresses, and your flowers.

Some maybe not so obvious things are details that add to the story of the day:  A hankie that was your grandmother’s, any special jewelry (mother’s rings, earrings, etc.), handwritten notes to your soon to be spouse, bridal party gifts, greenery for the day, boutonnieres, your veil, perfume, garter, and any gifts you might be giving one another.

I also recommend having the men bring any details as well. These might include the suit jacket and tie, cufflinks, shoes, watch, any cigars or flasks if applicable, groomsmen gifts or any other item that might add to the story of the day!

Hope that is helpful, let me know if you have further questions, or have any other details to add!

Why I come to a wedding early

When I meet with my wedding clients, I always tell them I will come at least an hour early to their wedding day and not charge them for it. Why would I do this? Isn’t my time worth anything? Yes, it is and I have found over the years of shooting there’s a good reason to come early.

When I get to the wedding venue early, I typically check out the lighting for the day.  Is it sunny? Cloudy? Rainy? Is there an overhang, is there a place that is cool? Is there a mud? Is there a place for the bride to stand without squinting? Is there a space large enough for the wedding party? All these questions need to be answered  and sometimes they can’t be until the day of the wedding.

I also come early to set up any gear and take a look at the ceremony spot before all the guests arrive.  This allows me to see the front  and back of the space I’m in.

Coming early also helps me to connect with other vendors so that I can put a name to a face,  as well as shoot details of the dress, shoes, stationary and other details without feeling rushed.  I can also meet members of the wedding party and the parents.

Because I want the photography timeline that the couple and I have worked out to stay in tact, coming early allows me to let other vendors know who are on site, (for example the make up artist for hair stylist) know that the next portion of the day is about to start.

Just a few tips as to why to come early for the day!
