Floral blooms for weddings

Wedding blooms are one of my favorite details to photograph.  They speak color and personality into a wedding day.  I wish I had the know how of flowers to put them together in such lovely arrangements and know the names of each, but I will leave that to the professional floral artists.  Here are a few to make your Wednesday a little prettier!

My photo shoot that never happened

After one incredible, amazing, beautiful Minneapolis weekend, it is hard to sit back down at the computer and get back into work!  This weekend I only had one shoot on the calendar, and then I got to spend some much needed quality time with my own kiddos.

After photographing a maternity session (more to come soon!!) The thought was to TRY to get some photos of my own kids downtown, but as my camera came out and my kids said, “No way fool!! Come BE with us.” Even though I rarely take out my camera with my kids (I wish I did it more!)  they know that it is work for me. They know as soon as my finger touches that button, I am in work mode not mom mode, and what they needed at that moment was mom and my 100% presence and attention.

2016-04-16 12.02.38-2Before I went into the “I-NEED-to-capture-you-at-this-very-moment-because-you-are-only-young-once-and-I-will-blink-and-you-will-be-grown” speech, I thought long and hard.  Recently I have been reading Hands Free Mama by Rachel Macy Stafford and been SO convicted every time I pick up my phone, camera, or to do list. I am now constantly asking myself the question, why.  Why put this on social media? Why am I picking up my phone?  Why am I deciding that whatever I am looking at on a screen is more important than the people in front of me? Why do I need to post this or that or comment here or there? (Let me tell you as a side bar, this has been so good for me and so incredibly hard and convicting!)

2016-04-18 09.14.14Not that I don’t value a good session or good photos or see the need to push my kids to do things they don’t really feel like doing, but Saturday was not that day.  I finally had a free weekend and a free day with my kids and instead of thinking about how we could enjoy the day together I was thinking how I should portray my life on social media and turing more of my attention on that than on the little people in front of me.

So instead of trying to capture the memories with my kids, or show how “perfect” my life is (which it is VERY far from!!), I decided to make and LIVE the memories with them.  Unfortunately I got zero photos on my camera, about 3 on my phone, but had one incredible day getting to know my own kids more and investing into these lives.  So my camera spent the day alone and I spent the day 100% fully invested in the people in front of me, and the rewards came that night, and hopefully for years to come.

Shoot, shoot, and shoot some more

Recently this week I had the opportunity to meet with a sweet college aged woman who so graciously took me out to coffee to pick my brain on photography.  It seems the older I get, I feel like the less I know!  With the technological world whirling around a 100 miles an hour, the upkeep of social media and just the chaos of the business ( oh and life with three school aged children and all their activities) it is enough to keep my head from rolling off.

I am realizing in this 13th year of being in business that I am not as young as I used to be.  I can not stay up until the wee hours editing, and after working a 10 hour wedding, get this, I am actually sore enough that I need the next day to recover.  I feel like I just ran a marathon.  Reguardless of all this, I LOVE it!!  And I told myself, the day I stop loving photography is the day I stop shooting.

Thankfully my legs are still movin and my arms are still waving and even after a 10 hour day, I am still smiling as I look through post images.

Let me bring you back to this young woman… and to all of you who are just starting out or still have the vigor and energy I had 10 years ago!! (Seriously I am not that old, but sometimes I just feel it, can I get an Amen!!)

One of her questions to me was how do you start to get more weddings?  My answer to her was the answer I received to this question 13 years ago… Just keep shooting.  Whatever it is that you love, weddings, children, nature, families, grads, corporate events, tabletop, whatever it may be, keep it up. Know your camera and your lenses.  And know them well.  Read your manual, look at You Tube videos, ask friends, whatever it may be.  Work hard to get better, and better, and just keep shooting.

      Happy Friday!

          Second shooters and assistants

For the first 2 years of my business I shot with an assistant.  My husband.  As much as I knew he loved weddings (insert sarcasm here) he loved me more.  So he agreed to be my assistant for the day.  He carried around my gear, helped me man my list of shots, told people where to go, and was a huge help.  After we had our first child, and my business continued to grow, we knew it was time to move on to the next phase.  He needed to be home with our daughter and I went on the hunt for another assistant/ second shooter!

My dreams came true when my sister volunteered to step into the role.  With a love for photography, she was a perfect fit.  Plus I got to hang out with my little sister who now worked full time.  For the next 3 years, we toured throughout Minneapolis and Wisconsin on our weekends.  But over time, after working a 40 hour week, my sister needed her weekends and I was on the hunt again.

I have to say the process was not an easy one.  I had some assistants that were wonderful people, but just did not fit my style.  Then Elena and I were introduced at a very random party for a mutual friend.  We got to chatting and a few weeks later she was in my living room with her 6 month old son and portfolio.  With a background in photography and a being at a similar stage in life, we clicked.  We tested out the waters with a few weddings, and now 5 years later we are still working together.

There are so many benefits to me and to the client in having a long term second shooter.  Not only is Elena my second shooter, she also shoots her own weddings.  She is also a good friend and she knows me.  All I have to do is look in one direction and she is there shooting at another angle and seeing with another pair of eyes.  There is little direction that I need to give her because she knows the drill.    When I am standing on one side of the ceremony, she is in the other.  Also, Elena knows tabletop photography.  She is amazing at it!  She will do many of the details at the reception, while I am off photographing the Bride, Groom, and wedding party.  She is my other pair of eyes on the day of a wedding.

A few photo angles that Elena and I took together (mine on Left, Elena’s on right).

It really is wonderful.  I am so thankful for Elena, her friendship as well as her gift.
