The here and now

Spring is honestly one of my favorite seasons.  There is a fresh, new wonderful feeling when the snow melts, the trees sprout buds, grow leaves and the entire earth warms in a green wave.  Yet it is quite frankly the season that sneaks up on me and then is gone in a flash.  Not only do the leaves start with their buds, but there is a gigantic to-do list along with the bookings and shootings.  It is so easy to get caught up in the to-do work list, and the mundane things at home that just have to be done that it is easy to forget to live in the moment that God has placed me in.  I have been thinking this week about how in the month of March, I was just hoping and wishing for these days to be here, and now that they are, I can’t believe how fast they have slipped through my fingers.

Last night after my kindergartner graduated to first grade, and my second grader walked over the line to third grade, our family sat down to watch old movies of the kids when they were little.  I honestly could not believe how fast they had grown.  My husband and I sat watery-eyed as we watched our kids in one of the busiest, grueling, draining, hardest seasons of our life.  At that point we had a 4 year old, almost 2 year old,  and a newborn.  He had just begun full-time ministry and I was in the middle of one of my busiest wedding seasons.  Yet I remember thinking in the moment about the days when we would be out of that stage and on to the next phase of life.  How easy and less stressful it would be.

Now we are in that moment that I was dreaming of, and like the spring passing through my fingers, so has the time been with my own children.  I am in a constant state of thinking ahead of the next phase rather than just living and being in the moment.  It is a sobering place and one that I want to continue to discipline myself to stay in.  The here and now.  I remember the wiser people around me saying “Enjoy it now, because in a moment they are gone.”  At the time it was a simple nod of the head, a light smile, or a I’m trying-but-I really-want-it -to-end-now-so-I-can-sleep-again-think-again-have my pre-maternity body back again-look.  But fully not understanding what their years of knowledge had to offer me.

Friends, as I sit reflecting, I challenge you to continue living in the moment.  You may be in a tough season or an easy one.  A long road or a short one.  Dealing with loss or participating in joy.  Wanting that next job or overwhelmed with too much work.  Waiting for whatever it may be, you fill in the blank.  But it is where you are now.  It is the place you are supposed to be.  It is the here and now. A day that you are supposed to enjoy and remember.  So in this mundane June Thursday, wherever you are, enjoy it, embrace it, and know that it is the here and now and the place you are to be content.

  • So true Karen! Very good reminder for me as I’m in that newborn stage right now:) It’s important to not wish any stage away and live in the moment! Thanks for the wise words.

Ahh, such a blessing and joy to watch babies grow up.  One day they are sweet and little, and before you know it they are smiling, crawling, talking and walking.  I loved seeing this little one as a baby, but even more so in her 6 month state.  She was such a ham for the photos and a perfect subject, laughing at me and with me almost the entire time.

    Tommy & Lauren:: Minneapolis Wedding

    It began as a crush  Lauren was drawn to Tommy back in high school, and she kept her secret crush hidden from him for at least a year.  After spending time with him on a bus ride back from a choir tour, she and Tommy “happened” to be sitting near each other and a conversation rolled between them for the remainder of the trip.  E-mails and phone numbers were exchanged and after time passed between them, the two were dating.

    Fast forward to October 2012.  Lauren knew the question was going to be coming soon, but just didn’t know when.  The two had spent the night together relaxing after a day of work.  Lauren kissed Tommy good bye and opened the door.  To her surprise, two pumpkins carved out with “Will You marry me?” were etched into the sides.  Lauren, in shock and not knowing if they were for her, turned to see Tommy on a knee holding a ring.  She bubbled a yes, and the two quickly began planning for their May wedding.

    The day was fabulous, I couldn’t have been happier photographing this couple and their beautiful friends!  It was a joy and honor to be a part of this truly amazing marriage!  Tommy and Lauren, I wish you both the best as you begin this wonderful, amazing journey of marriage!!

    And here is your slide show:

      Tommy & Lauren:: Details of a Minneapolis wedding

      I am so thankful for all my clients. Getting to know them is one of the things I love about my job!  But getting to know a couple to the core, what makes them tick, what moves them, how they grew up, family dynamics, how they fell in love, is truly what I love about my job and only happens to this depth once in a while.  Tommy and Lauren were one of those couples, not only to me, but to Kevin as well.

      My husband is not only a dashingly handsome funny man, he is also a youth pastor, and for this matter, Tommy’s youth pastor.  He and I got to watch Tommy grow and mature into the man he is today for the last 7 years that we have known him.  When he and Lauren asked if Kevin would officiate the wedding and he and I do their premarital counseling with them, we were able to go to get to know them together as a couple in such a great way.

      We made is a complete family affair when they asked our kids to be in the wedding!  I shot it, Kevin married them, and our kiddos walked the aisle.  It was such a wonderful day to be a part of and one that I know we will all never forget!

        Boy or Girl?!

        I simply can not wait!  Last year my sister and her husband were married and when they came to us this spring telling us they had a great surprise for us, it was all I could do to hope and wish for a new baby!!  But being that they had just been married, I didn’t even want to ask the questions.  Lo and behold they surprised us with an ultrasound photo of my newest niece or nephew to arrive in September.  I simply can not wait as I can again ward off my baby itch and wait to find out what they will be having!!

        Special thanks to the Golden Valley Bachmans for allowing us to utilize their space!!
