8 years

Today is the day I married my best friend, Kevin, 8 years ago!  I had to laugh at our one photo we have in our home of our wedding, we were just kids.  21 and 22, young and in love.  We thought we knew everything, but actually knew nothing.  How far we have come and I am so glad and grateful for the 8 years God has given me with this man.  I would love to say that it has been all bliss, but you know I would be lying.  It has been a journey of commitment and of grace.  We have learned a few things along the way, and continue to do so.  We don’t have it all figured out, and probably never will, but I am so thankful for the time we have had together.  I love you a lot, and am so glad to still call you my best friend.

Happy Anniversary!

Fall…my favorite season

Bring on those pumpkin spice lattes, the visit to the apple orchard, pumpkin carving, fall jackets, and that beautiful golden light.  I have to say fall is among my favorite seasons (second summer, a close spring, and of course winter as being dead last).  In MN it is such a short time, so squeezing in all out favorite family activities, (and anniversary, and 4 of the 5 birthdays,) are extremely hard to do.  But we love to live up the season to its fullest.  This year on the agenda: the annual apple orchard visit, family photos (ours!), a farm visit, and school starting!  I simply can not wait to ring in the season!  Happy Autumn, and weekend!!

(One of my very favorite engagement sessions from last year; I looooovvvee the light.  Perfect and yummy!)

3 under 4 and 1 on the way: Rochester family

My sister came up to the Cities with a purpose, get the kids photographed before the next one is born.  How could I resist?  3 of my favorite little cute people (besides my own) were ready and (almost) willing to be photographed for their fall photos.  In the past we have just done family sessions with the rest of the big family gatherings, but this time was different!  We gathered up the kids (left mine at home) and headed downtown for some urban photos.  The kids did great despite the attack of the killer misquotes, and the heat.

I seriously do not know how my little sister does it.  She is a great mom and wife, and while thinking about another child almost makes me crazy, she is calm, collected, and put together.  We can not wait for the newest addition to arrive in October, and this time around they decided to wait on finding out the sex, and secretly wanting another girl.

Here are some of my favorites from our morning.  Love you all!

… was anyone interested in the session besides me and Claire…

These pictures are beautiful, good subject matter 😉 Claire and Andrew used to babysit us, awesome people.

    60, golfing, and cheesecake

60 is one of those BIG ages.  One for celebrations and family.  My dad hit the 60 mark in July, and my sisters and I wanted to think of something that was totally different to celebrate his big day. Because there are 6, soon to be 7, grand kids under five, we wanted to do something with the adults only.

My dad loves golf.  Wait that is an understatement… he loves, loves, loves golf.  Unfortunately none of us girls really like it that much.  I tried to go with him while I was in High School and it was pathetic.  Probably because I am so non competitive, and I just wanted to talk to him the whole time.  Both my sisters had the same experience.  He was gracious about it, but we thought it was time for a re-try.

I have to say, I actually really enjoyed the game that day.  Probably not the golf aspect, but the family time.   My stomach hurt so much by the end of the day.  From the clues that my sister Claire made for the course to the reckless driving we did with the golf carts, to the made up rules, I think the celebration was a success.  We continue to thank God for the gift of my dad each day.

See how much I love golf?  I play in flip flops!

And to end the day, we celebrated with a family favorite: cheesecake!

(Just a side note; the men played competitively on a team while me, my mom and sisters tried…. but failed miserably.)

Oh my gosh, I love that you golfed in flip flops! That would totally be something I would do, too 🙂 Love it!

    • I don’t know if I ever told you that I had your dad a handful of times in college! Must have been statistics and something else business-ish…. fun connection! Our dads are great, aren’t they?

the joys and pains of the first day

My water broke at 4am.  “Are you sure?” my husband asked me?  “Do we really have to leave now?”  I just hit 36 weeks of pregnancy, and I knew it was time.  Being that this was our first child, our bags were not packed (we thought we had at least 4 if not 6 more weeks to go, isn’t your first always late?)  I trudged through our Minneapolis condo searching for pre-pregnancy clothes (of course I would fit into them after leaving the hospital)  the car seat buried under the mound of baby gifts, and my baby boy and girl clothes and blankets (we didn’t know what we were having).

We arrived at the hospital only to have the nurse tell me that I was too small to be having a baby.  She checked and checked and finally after about 2 hours I was admitted and put on pitocin.  I have this wonderful photo of me smiling joyously and unexpectedly in the hospital before I went into full labor (I am sparing you details).  Six hours later and lots of this wonderful drug called pitocin, our beautiful 4 pound baby girl was born.  We gushed over her teenyness and beauty.  We oogled over whose features she had and then she was whisked away to the NICU.  At that moment I had not realized how premature our baby was.  Although she was the biggest in intensive care, there were other issues that we dealt with in the next 4 weeks of her life.  This amazing motherly bond was bread within me during those weeks.

I relived those first weeks today as Lydia started her first day of school.  “Where did the time go?” my husband asked me.  I always knew it would go fast, so many people had told me, but today a fresh wave of that motherly bond hit.  As we walked out of the parking lot, I realized afresh that she was not my little baby anymore, and would never be.  What had been done to prepare for this day and days to come had been instilled and she was ready.  Probably more than I was.

Seven hours later, I waited with the other parents in the parking lot.  She beamed when she saw me and said “Mom, I love school.  But I love you more!”  Just the words I needed for today.  A glimpse into the heart of my baby…

    • This made me cry! (definitely 39 weeks pregnant…ha!)

    • This made me tear up too. I know it is just a matter of time before I will be sending my baby girl to school. A couple more years…. Time sure flies!

    • Nicole

Oh, how precious! What a cute story and pic of you two 🙂

    • Lisa

Gracie starts Tuesday, your story made me cry. Wait till its your last. Your pictures are beautiful!

    • Laura Newby

Lovely, Karen. I remember those early weeks. Lydia is just beautiful. I can hardly believe what a darling GIRL, not baby, she now is. Blessings to you, Kevin and the kiddos.

    • Amanda Scaletta

Can’t believe she’s so big! I’m sure a mom is never quite prepared for these new endeavors, but it sounds like you are handling it all with grace.

btw: You look great in both these pictures (i especially love your tank! would borrow it if we lived close enough!)
