Wedding day photo tips:: For the Bridesmaids

So many things happen on a wedding day. There are loads of resources for a bride, but what about her bridesmaids? What can they do to help?   As friends, and especially those in the wedding party, there are small things that you can do to help make the day go smoothly, more efficiently and alleviate stress for the bride on her wedding day.  Below are just a few examples that I have to offer you as a bridesmaid!

  1. Be on time!   Ask the bride where and when you need to be the day before or even the week before and be there.  There are so many ways a wedding day time line can go off, and you don’t want to be the one making that happen because you are late to getting your make up done.  Even being early to the salon or getting ready spot will ease the bride from more stress she doesn’t need.
  2. Have your hair and make up finished and be in your dress (unless you are taking robe shots) before the bride gets in her dress.  These photos are especially beautiful and help create gorgeous getting ready shots.  When a bridesmaid is helping her friend get into the dress, there are emotions happening and a photo for the album is created.  Let’s face it, most of us as a bridesmaid,  do not want to be in a robe or our comfy clothes in any album that we might look at together 10 years down the line!  (I know this is not always doable, especially if your hair and make up people will be on-site and filtering through all the bridesmaids, but even having one or two bridesmaids in dresses helps created beautiful photos!)
  3. Be another set of eyes for the bride.  Is her dress dragging on the ground, help her carry it.  Is her hair blowing in her face, wisp it away for her. If it is an especially windy day, making sure he veil stays in place is also helpful.  These photos are also beautiful and add to the story line of the day.
  4. Be a consistent source of encouragement.  Let’s face it. There is a reason she asked you to stand with her, you are her friend! You get her and she wants you there.  Make her laugh, keep her calm, remind her of that amazingly hilarious trip to Mexico you took together, and get her laughing or crying!  There are so many ways that you, as a dear friend, can bring out the best in her.  This is an incredible day, have fun with her.  These are some of my favorite photos of the bride and her maids.
  5. Make it about her.  We’ve all been in that wedding where there is that one bridesmaid who kinda, sorta forgets that it is not her day.  Don’t be that girl.  Make it all about helping your friend be the star of her own wedding day.  Stand back in the limelight and if something doesn’t go the way you envisioned it, don’t worry or make it a big deal, today is about her.
  6. If you have kids, have someone else be responsible for them, at least for part of the day.  I know that can be hard, trust me, I have been that mom who has been in the wedding as a bridesmaid, and be mom at the same time.  Getting little people’s hair done right and in the dresses, shoes and ties can be overwhelming.  Hiring a babysitter for a portion of the day, having a grandparent, aunt, uncle or friend help can make it not only less stressful for you, but also the bride.

So I know this not an extensive list, but just some ideas that can be helpful to you as the bridesmaid on a wedding day.

      Spring Session Locations!

I am so happy to be writing this because spring, (well and summer and fall) are my very favorite seasons!  As spring approaches, I also start thinking about the blooms, green grass, pastel colors and photo sessions.  I thought I would offer you some of my favorite locations to highlight the beauty of spring as well as places i just love shooting in.

Tippy top of the list is the Japanese Gardens and Rose Gardens off Lake Harriet in Minneapolis.  This location is one of those wonderful places not only to have photos taken at, but also to take a walk around the lake and see some of the city.  The park is filled with flowering trees, loads of perennials and annuals. It also contains two fountains as well as a pathway straight to the lake.  If you are adventurous enough, a slight walk will take you to one of the beaches and the bandshell. Weekends are crazy busy with the general public out and about as well as other Minneapolis photographers and their clients.  I would highly recommend a weeknight to utilize the park if it is possible with your schedule.  Also check to make sure there are no events going on as this is a popular Minneapolis lake and connected to the Minneapolis trail system where various races take place throughout the year.

Another beautiful location is Como Park.  The option of shooting in the conservatory is always there (for a sight fee of $50 for up to 3 people) you can meander through the indoor gardens as well as the outdoor gardens that are typically planted at the end of April.  Taking a walk down to Como lake will give you more options and let you take advantage of the spring weather.  Again, this is a heavily populated location, but can be beautiful if you are ok with the crowds.

      The Maple Grove Arboretum

Father Hennepin Park near the Stone Arch Bridge

All of which have some sort of flowers, but also bridges and buildings in close proximity to add more textures and tones to your session.

Various parks around your city can also be great spots for photos.  I know of a few other small parks where there are lakes and fresh growth happening as well as new flowers planted. If you are interested in setting up your session, please contact me with more information and availability.  I’d love to get you in for a Mini Session or full session!!

        FAQ’S: Workflow and editing

Continuing on with some the small series of frequently asked questions I started last week, I am moving on to another question I received about workflow and editing.

Q: What sorts of editing software do you use and what does your workflow look like?

This is a question I not only get from other photographers, but a question my clients like to know.  Everyone’s systems are different and can be changing as new software comes out.  My current workflow after a wedding or session takes place generally looks like this: (and of course a list, because if you know me at all, you know I love lists!)

        1. After coming home from a session I upload all the files to an external hard drive.  If it was a wedding I was shooting, I will upload 1-2 photos on Facebook and Instagram the night of the wedding for the couple to have something to view when they get finished with the evening or for guest to see.
        2. Usually the day after the shoot or wedding, I will take the images into PhotoMechanic, and cull through the photos.  I choose some for blog posts, and then others to be edited for the entire gallery.  If you don’t know anything about PhotoMechanic, it is an incredibly fast culling system and well worth the investment!
        3. From there, I take the photos into Lightroom to edit in the Develop Module.  I edit first the photos for the blog, and if its a wedding, export the photos to dropbox, for my wonderful and incredibly talented editor Anne to edit.  If it is a full session, I edit through the rest of the photos for the client’s gallery in Lightroom. (Use this LINK to get a 30 day FREE trial to Lightroom and Photoshop in Adobe’s Creative Cloud)
        4. From there, I typically take photos that need further tweaks and edits into Photoshop for deeper editing (typically for newborn skin, removing items out of photos, dodging and burning shadows, etc.)
        5. After the photos are complete and edited, either from Anne or myself, I will bring the photos to Pass (the gallery viewing system) for clients to view and download their photos.
        6. When the photos are ready to be blogged (weddings are typically 2-3 days after the wedding, and lifestyle sessions can be later), I take the photos into BlogStomp.  This software is so slick and has made blogging for me faster and more efficient. There are so many options of putting photos together and it creates the sizing without having to take the time to resize each individual image.  Literally I can create a blog post in 10 minutes!
        7. For weddings, I also create a slideshow of the couple which is posted to Vimeo and I also attach to their blog post.  To create this, I use Animoto software, which creates a beautiful slideshow.  This software is free, but you can upgrade to the Pro level if you are wanting more options. (Get a free month when you use this LINK)
        8. The last thing I do mainly for wedding clients, but sometime Lifestyle clients, is to create an album for them.  In designing albums, I use Fundy Album Designer.  This drag and drop software again, makes creating an album fast and efficient.  I process most of my images and albums through White House Custom Colour, but if you have another lab that you work with, I am positive that they have your album company!

Phew!  I know. That is a lot of information thrown at you!  It can be overwhelming if you are just starting your business, but gradually if you add systems and software it will help you immensely be more efficient with your time so you can get back to other things!  Also, if you haven’t noticed, check out all the items in RED, as there are promo codes and links to all the systems that I use!  Have a fabulous Monday and feel free to e-mail me with other questions you might want me to answer!

          Vendor Highlight:: Designs by Rita

Rita and I met a few years back when she was the florist at a wedding I was photographing.  I really admire her work and when I asked if she would help me with a spring maternity session by creating a floral crown, she gladly agreed!   She is a veteran in the floral world and someone I look up to as a business owner.  In the ever-changing world of weddings, sticking around and maintaining quality business is hard to come by.  Rita is the real deal. If you have a minute to check her work out, you will not be disappointed. Below are some questions I asked her to answer!

What are 3 words describe your work?
          Honest, Reasonable, Beautiful

How long have you been in business?
I have been doing flowers for 30 years.

Why or how did you get started in your industry?
I wanted my own business and I love being creative, flowers and weddings seemed like a perfect fit!

          What have weddings taught you?
That traditions change and everyone has their own vision.

          What is your style?
My style is my customers style. I truly try to capture the look they are going for.

What is the best thing you have seen happen on a wedding day?
For me personally as the florist, when the bride is brought to tears when she sees her bouquet for the first time.

What are some sources of inspiration or influences on your work?
Like many, Pinterest. However, my inspiration comes from my customers, their vision and always keeping up to date with designs, themes and color palettes.

What’s your favorite way to wind down after a hard day?
Time spent with family and friends. Maybe some snuggle time with my dogs. Sometimes, getting in my sewing room and finding other ways of being creative.

Best or worst wedding advice you received when you got married?
Best…Always remain friends and laugh together, because at the end of the day…you will need that.

Advice you would give to newly engaged couples.
Continue to go on dates…FOREVER. Remind yourself during the rough times what brought you to this place in your life to begin with and if you feel you lost that…FIND IT AGAIN!

What sets you apart in your industry or what do your clients say about you?
My clients like that I’m up front and honest. I don’t push things upon them, I am here to bring their vision to life and to guide them in that direction. They like the fact that my years of experience not only lies in my floral designs, but in planning and organizing of the event itself.

Be sure to look Rita up Online and on Facebook!
