Why do a Newborn session in your home?

Why a newborn session in your home?

As a young mom, it only took me one time to decide why, as a mom, I would not do an in studio newborn session again while my kids were young.  I had found a studio 20 minutes away and found the perfect out fits for my girls.  Knowing we would need mid-morning naps and feedings, I purposefully scheduled my 30 minute session around the those times, and after sweating through getting myself and them ready, headed out.

Upon arrival the studio was running behind, so I took my kids to the play place to burn off some steam.  When we arrived back for our now 30 minute late session, my youngest was ready to eat and my toddler was ready to bolt!  I fed my youngest as quickly as I could, but of course babies are on their own schedules (and to this day, she is still on her own time line!)

We headed into the studio and a woman quickly told me that I only had 15 minutes left of my scheduled time because I had took time to feed my baby.  She then proceeded to treat the kids as if they were school-agers by telling them to “smile, and say cheese”.

In the end, I ended up with one photo that was semi decent and a terrible taste in my mouth toward studio sessions.

Benefits

Recently I had the conversation with a friend as to why I don’t do many newborn shoot in the studio.  As much as I would love this, I have found some amazing benefits of being able to photograph a session in client’s homes from my own experience and from others I have talked to.In home lifestyle newborn session by Karen Feder Photography www.karenfederphotography.com

1) It’s YOUR space.  Your toddlers and babies are most comfortable in what they know, so bringing a camera into the situation isn’t as out of the norm as it could be in the studio.
2) It’s comfortable.  I have had 3 babies and I know how difficult it is to even get a shower in during the day, much less get hair and my make up done!  Having the baby ready and photographed while mom is getting herself ready makes the time less stressful and everyone more happy!
3) No driving!!  Getting moving right after having a baby is hard, especially if mom is still healing and figuring out how this new baby fits into life; it is much easier to be in your own environment!
4) Your props, clothes, feeding supplies, etc are all at home.  No need to stress out over what to wear, bring to the session, or worry about forgetting something.
5) Making a mess, feeding your child, changing a diaper, giving your toddler a snack/ lunch, incorporating a pup, going outside, walking to your favorite park, changing an outfit, photographing the nursery, etc, are all easy things to do because you are on your own turf!

    Bently’s Six month session:: Mill City Family session

    Oh how I love Mill City and also seeing past wedding clients!  Gina and Steve were married a few years ago and (best thing ever) on my birthday!!  They both treated me SO well and are so near and dear to my heart! Then back in October, their sweet lil man was born and I had the privilege of photographing his newborn session!  Seeing him at six months, makes me swoon.  Those big blue eyes and two tooth smile had me! I love seeing past clients and watching their families grow.

      Reflections:: Spring

      Every winter after the Holiday’s finish, I start dreaming of spring and summer.  In Minnesota spring is hard to come by. The months of March and April can be beautiful one day and then disaster the next!  This spring I have a few personal projects I am hoping to complete by the end of May.

      1. My biggest undertaking and one that I have been dreaming about for the past few years, is getting a box garden into place.  After woking with my kids and a teacher at their school for the past few years in their Junior Master Gardner plan, I finally put mine to paper.  Granted this year, I might only have one garden, I am starting slowly and planning for things that hopefully won’t die or get eaten by the pesky bunnies!
      2. Planning out my entire summer.  As you know I love lists and planning.  I also love planning for the fun things we will get to do as a family.  Camps, sports, the Minnesota State Fair and some day trips around the state are on the agenda, as is our big family vacation (of course it includes waterslides and being outdoors as much as possible!)
      3. Employing my kids.  See my insta stories recently?  My 13 year old has taken it over and she is running with it.  My 11 year old will be assembling welcome gifts and writing thank you’s, while my 9 year old son will be mowing and taking care of the yard.  All of them will have daily chores that they already do, but going above and beyond will help them all understand the work that goes into owning a business and working in tandem to make the summer months go well for the all of us. It helps that they will all be paid for these activities too…

      How will spring look for you? Are you a planner?  Have any trips or gardening tips?  I would LOVE to hear more.  Drop me a line, I’d love to hear more about them!

        Online tools I am using

        If you have been following me at all, you know I love systems and ways to make life easier.  Don’t we all though?

        Dayblock summer wedding in minneapolis by karen feder photography

        Today I am going to share with you a few online tools I use that I use that are pretty inexpensive or free to help streamline all the ways I keep up with blogging and social media throughout the months.

        1. Planoly for Instagram– My ALL TIME favorite online system right now. Free or just $9.99/ month I can easily plan out my entire month for blog posts.  It is desktop and mobile compatible, so if you need to be on the go and schedule out your posts, this is a great tool.  I have not really found something I don’t like about it.  If you are looking for a system to see and plan out your Insta posts, start with their free trial and I assure you, you will look no farther!
        2. Facebook Scheduler- Recently I listened to a podcaster who was talking about social media.  Did you know in order for your Facebook posts (at least on business pages!) to be seen, you need to be posting AT LEAST four times per day?  This is so crazy and quite honestly, who has the time to be positing over 4 times a day! Not this girl.  So I started using the Facebook scheduler.  Honestly I know algorithms are all messed up, and I am not even trying to figure them out, but I will tell you, I have been planning out these 4 times/ day and posting them and have seen a trajectory on the up in my insights.  Plus, it has made me go back to previous weddings and sessions I have shot and share more photos.  We shall see how long I can keep this up for, but for the time being, I am really loving these!
        3. Quickbooks– Disclaimer here.  Not free at all, but completely worth the investment.  For someone who hates bookkeeping, I have been using quickbooks for the last few years and finally feel like I am starting to get the hang of it. On my list of to do’s this moth though, is to hand over the bookkeeping side of things to a real live bookkeeper who can easily go online and organize everything.
        4. She Reads Truth– I am LOVING this online Bible reading plan.  I use the app on my phone to keep up with my Bible reading, but also use the desktop version when I sit down at my desk.  There is no reason why I can’t read my Bible on a daily basis without this online tool!
        5. Audiable– Not only am I reading my Bible online, but I have been listening to a few online books this past winter.  My kids have also loved this app and desktop tool, plus we even have it for our kindle, so that wherever we leave off if we are listening in the car, we can pick it back up at home.  This past summer, the kids and I listened to over 20 books and we plan to do the same or more this summer!
        6. Blog Stomp– Need help with blog posts? Pinterest photos? Blog stomp is a great tool to compress the images that you need for your blog posts.  I use this for almost all my posts and I can literally put together an entire wedding post in less than 10 minutes.  Check them out if you are looking for an incredible tool for blogging!
        7. Fundy– Fundy has been my go to album designer.  I love the way that it creates proofs for my clients to view that are in low resolution as also the way it literally creates an album for me in minutes.

        What online tools are you loving?  Please share them with me!  I am always looking for more tools to make my life easier, especially in busy season!

          Baby M Family:: Roseville Newborn

          Emily and Derrick’s maternity session was full of snow and sleet, but their newborn session was much different! As they welcomed sweet Morgan into their family, the day was full sun and spring in its glory!  Can you not get enough of this full head of hair? I told Emily that Miss M was one lucky lady!  I can not wait to see them again in a few months as she continues to grow!
