Grace upon grace… even today

This week.  This day.

It is one of transition and crazy for me. We have one more month of summer vacation, activities are in full swing, kids are fighting, I have sessions to edit and calendars to manage. Let me be honest with you… I am just plain tired.

I am behind in my editing, my house is needing a good clean and my poor husband is getting the leftovers of me. But friends let me tell you, if there is one thing that I am learning in this season of life, it is giving grace to myself, my calendar, and my kids. I don’t always have to have the picked up house, activities will slip through the cracks and I may not make the deadlines I create for my work life. But I am getting things done, loving on my kids, determined to enjoy each day to the fullest utilize the rest of summer WELL, even if it does last until 1 am!!

So how are you doing today? Are you giving yourself grace?

    Reflections:: Life Learning

    “The only way to really learn is to do.”

    I had multiple internships after I graduated from college, and all of them were in the field of photography.  I tried everything.  Table-top photography, editorial photography, studio photography, to both wedding and family photography.  I didn’t know so many sub-fields could exist or all the positions that were held within just photography! So I completely resonate with this quote.  Keep doing what you love and connecting with those you follow and! Being a life long learner can only benefit you and those around you.

      Reflections:: July

      Agh, I just love July.  If you know me at all, you know I just love the heat, and with little of it throughout the year, July seems to be the one month that is the constant with it’s upper temps and sunshine.

      I actually told my husband the other day, that I wish I had a July birthday.  Think of all the water activities that could have been done and the party with your school friends you could have.  November just seems to be the month its drab and cold and panning a birthday party outside in Minnesota is just a chance most aren’t willing to take!!

      Not only are there numerous water and outdoor activities, can we also talk about the late nights spent playing outside, talking to neighbors, the smell of fresh cut grass and wearing flip flops all day long?!

      But I digress.

      So even though I will be working this weekend, you better bet, I will be out in the heat and sun doing it!

        Reflections:: Black and White images

        Black and whites have always been my favorite images. In college I would spend hours upon hours in the darkroom creating that perfect moody photo with just the right contrast. Now I’m thankful for editing systems where I can change that filter with the click of a button, but seeing how light lands on a subject is still something I thrive after in every event!

          Reflections:: Staying Sane

          It is crazy season.  This month alone I am photographing 6 weddings and have family shoots every weekend on top of client meetings.  Not only that, my kids go to various camps and I feel like the mom Uber is in full effect (andy no tips included!)

          Staying sane for me during this season takes quite a bit of work, and as a people pleaser and lover of these summer months, I have been trying really hard to keep my head above water while still enjoying this small amount of summer that we as Minnesotans get! So how do I do it… here are a few things working for me!

          1. Waking up early.  My kids have now entered the teenage zone and are sleeping until at least 9am, so for me, this means waking up at 6:30 to try and get in a 30 minute workout and a quiet time, coffee and a few moments to access the day.
          2. Working out! My stress level rises at this point in the year, and I have found that even a quick walk around the block can change my entire attitude.  Bonus, when my kids decide they want to come with me and we get some one on one time in.
          3. Shutting down. It is SO easy to work until the wee hours of the night, and sometimes I have to do that, but every night at 10:30 my phone dings and tells me I better be in bed in 30 minutes to remind me that I need sleep to be a kind person the next day!
          4. Checking out from social media.  We all know it is a time waster, and this month I just hired on my social media manager, Susan, to take over this task for me so I can be laser focused on my work days.
          5. A laptop. I just bought myself a little Chromebook this year so that I have a laptop to take with me when I am waiting for kids to be done with activities. I’m not a huge fan of laptops just because I like to mentally work in one spot, but with the way things have been going this summer, I needed something small to be able to keep up with posts like this and work away from home.
          6. Grace upon grace. I am simply one person and realizing I can not do it (or need to do it all!)  all is something I am constantly needing to be reminded of!
