New Beginning Styled Shoot

The inspiration for this styled shoot started with the Pantone Color of the Year – Greenery and new beginnings. Weddings are definitely a new beginning for couples – starting your life as a team, looking forward to the future and the growth that goes with that. Along with the greenery came the idea of a springtime backdrop for a wedding in Excelsior, MN – a town that really comes alive in the spring and gets really lively during the summer!

It was the perfect location for such a shoot. Pique Travel provides a historic look at the small town, giving lots of natural colors and details. The wood from Lyman Lumber built in the 1940’s provided a warm but urban feel.  All the touches from the original metal rooftop, wood floors and rolling buffet were brought in to make the whole building feel cohesive. Using local vendors was a must, as each of the creative spirits from around the small town brought their own artistic abilities to the collaboration.

    Emily and Mike:: Minneapolis Couple

    Hanson’s Tree Farm in Anoka  was the perfect backdrop for a Holiday themed session for Emily and her sweet husband Mike.  Bringing the cutest props (scarves, gloves, mugs and a sign) made the session feel like we were already in full Holiday swing!

      FAQ’S:: How to create a wedding day time line

      One of the very first questions I receive in a wedding consultation is

      How much time do I need for photos on my wedding day?

      Knowing how long and when photos are to take place sets up most of the other vendors for the day and knowing how to put this together can help tremendously and alleviate lots of stress when meeting with other vendors and figuring out how your day might look.

      Typically when I get this question, there are a few other questions that I usually have for the couple:
      What time is your wedding at?
      How long is your ceremony?
      Will you be doing a first look, or do you plan on not seeing each other before the ceremony?
      How large is your wedding party?
      What photos are most important to you?
      Do you want to go to an alternate location between the ceremony and reception?

      From here, we can start setting up the time line of the day.  So to give you an example say you have a 4:00 wedding, the ceremony is 30 minutes long, you are planning on seeing each other beforehand for the first look, want an alternate location and have an average wedding party of 10 attendants and the photos of you and your spouse are of utmost importance.

      Knowing all this information, I would advise you on booking a 10 hour day and the time line would look like this:

      1:00- Wedding party to arrive at getting ready location, detail shots, finishing touches shots
      1:30-First look with bride and groom, photos together
      2:00- Wedding Party photos
      2:30- Bride’s family photo (add in grandparents and other extended family)
      3:00- Groom’s family photo (add in grandparents and other extended family)
      3:30- Prep/ hide for ceremony
      4:00- Ceremony Begins
      4:30- Ceremony ends/ greet guests
      5:00- Head to alternate location in transportation
      7:00- Announcement of bride and groom
      7:15 Dinner served/ Cake cutting/ Sunset photos of Bride and Groom/ Toasts
      8:30- Dance begins- Reception candids
      11:00 End of contract

      Hope that helps in your planning!

        Spring Session Locations!

        I am so happy to be writing this because spring, (well and summer and fall) are my very favorite seasons!  As spring approaches, I also start thinking about the blooms, green grass, pastel colors and photo sessions.  I thought I would offer you some of my favorite locations to highlight the beauty of spring as well as places i just love shooting in.

        Tippy top of the list is the Japanese Gardens and Rose Gardens off Lake Harriet in Minneapolis.  This location is one of those wonderful places not only to have photos taken at, but also to take a walk around the lake and see some of the city.  The park is filled with flowering trees, loads of perennials and annuals. It also contains two fountains as well as a pathway straight to the lake.  If you are adventurous enough, a slight walk will take you to one of the beaches and the bandshell. Weekends are crazy busy with the general public out and about as well as other Minneapolis photographers and their clients.  I would highly recommend a weeknight to utilize the park if it is possible with your schedule.  Also check to make sure there are no events going on as this is a popular Minneapolis lake and connected to the Minneapolis trail system where various races take place throughout the year.

        Another beautiful location is Como Park.  The option of shooting in the conservatory is always there (for a sight fee of $50 for up to 3 people) you can meander through the indoor gardens as well as the outdoor gardens that are typically planted at the end of April.  Taking a walk down to Como lake will give you more options and let you take advantage of the spring weather.  Again, this is a heavily populated location, but can be beautiful if you are ok with the crowds.

        The Maple Grove Arboretum

        Father Hennepin Park near the Stone Arch Bridge

        All of which have some sort of flowers, but also bridges and buildings in close proximity to add more textures and tones to your session.

        Various parks around your city can also be great spots for photos.  I know of a few other small parks where there are lakes and fresh growth happening as well as new flowers planted. If you are interested in setting up your session, please contact me with more information and availability.  I’d love to get you in for a Mini Session or full session!!

          Preparing for your Engagement Session

          Happy Thursday to you and we are dead in the middle of winter and engagements!! Maybe you just got engaged, or maybe you have been engaged for months and you are ready to schedule your engagement session with myself or your photographer.  Here are some tips I send out to my clients to help it to be a better experience!

          On location::

          Do you love wine tasting?  Working out together? Canoeing, sleeping in, walking your dog, ice skating or exploring one of Minnesota’s lakes? Add more personality to your photos by choosing the location of your session.  Weather it is your favorite coffee shop, brewery, or local park where you first met, make the place be sentimental to you.  Engagements sessions are the date that I become the third wheel, the tag along that photographs you and your future spouse doing the things that you love doing together.

          On what to wear::

          Wearing something that makes you feel confidant and comfortable are generally the photos that you naturally love.  I like my clients to bring 2-3 outfit changes ranging in casual to dressy for different looks.  Patterns, bold colors and accessories photograph really well. Feel free to et creative with your wardrobe or check out my Pinterest board for more inspiration.

          On the length of time::
          Typically I like to use these sessions a a way for my client and I to get to know each other better and feel more comfortable together so the sessions can last anywhere from one hour to two hours depending on the locations we will be going.  This is the one time besides the first meeting, where I will be able to see how you as a couple interact together and you will see how I work behind the camera giving all of us a better feel of how the wedding day will be.

          If you are ready to schedule your engagement session, drop me an e-mail, my spring schedule is filling up fast!
