Edina Family Session:: The Schroeder Family

Do you have those friends that you just love seeing?  I wish Lauren and I got to see more of each other though out the year, but when we do it is always a fun time.  And this time around it was no different.  Her sweet family met me with giant hugs and waves and joy as we started their session together.  I have been photographing this couple since they were engaged and I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon!  They are a sweet gift and I am so thankful for them!

    Roseville Family Session:: Behnken Family

    Twenty eight years. Yes that is how long Laura and I have been friends!  (Exactly my age….very year I continue to turn 28…. haha). But in all seriousness I met this sweet girl in my 5th grade class and we just clicked.  We spent countless hours on the phone, jamming out to 90’s pop music, getting high school diploma’s together, driving back and forth to visit each other in college, standing in each other’s weddings, watching babies enter the world, parenting, dealing with life’s struggles and all the while being blessed to be friends.  I feel extremly lucky to call Laura my friend and do life with her all these years.  I hope you are blessed with a “Laura” in your life.  Hold onto that dear friend because they are a complete and utter gift.

    Photographing her kids this year made me feel really old.  Her oldest enters high school, and I realized its not much longer that we will have these kids in our homes.  How fast time goes by, but what a blessing to get to walk through those life stages with the ones we love so dearly!

      What to wear for family sessions

      Happy fall to you, and with that, happy family photo time!  At this point in the year there are so many mommas asking me for clothing suggestions for family photos.  While I am no clothing expert, I have learned a few things along the way and want to share with you today four tips to choosing the type of clothing to wear for your family photos!

      1. This is the biggie and most important… As the momma, start with you.  Find the dress, jeans and jacket, t-shirt or style that YOU feel most comfortable in and feel confidant in and start there.  Often times we choose what our kids want to wear and work around them, but most of the time, kids are pretty flexible in what they want to wear, so choose that outfit you love the most and then work everyone around you.
      2. Bring in the accessories!  You can make any dark blue shirt better by adding a jean jacket, gold neckace or scarf to the mix.  Add in earrings, bangles and shoes to add your flair to the photos.  I will preface this with thinking about your kiddos too.  (In as much as we love dolling them up, be aware that if your toddler hates headbands, chances are she won’t keep it in for the photo, so it might be wise to forget it and elivate the stress!)
      3. Stay away from too much matching.  Gone are the days of denim shirts and kackki pants ( think 1999 and Gap ads!) Mixing and matching, adding plads and stripes , but not too many, and bringing in textures makes you pop in photos.
      4. Take tips from the clothing industry.  Step into any store these days and you will know the styles and colors that are on trend.  Jewel tones and neutrals photograph well against the green trees as well as the changing foliage that comes in October.
      5. If all else fails, Pinterest.

      Feel free to reach out as needed!  Again, I am no clothing expert, but I am happy to help and guide in any way I can as you prepare for your session.  I can’t wait to see so many of you this fall!

        Reflections:: Parenting

        I was listening to a podcast this week about raising teenagers. The host mentioned that she remembered feeling physically exhausted she was when her kiddos were little, but now as teens, feeling mentally exhausted with all the things that she has to think about. Questions ranging from Are they making the right friends, to are they BEING a good friend, to have I prepared them well for xyz. Having a 13 year old, I am just beginning to feel this way, and quite frankly there are days I would rather go back to the physically exhausted days! Any other momma feeling me, or am I just plain crazy?

          Minneapolis Family Session:: Sharbono Family

          Rebecca and I went to college together and for a time she was even my boss!  Every year, they take advantage of my mini sessions and I get to see her and they way her kids continue to grow!  This year was just as great as the past years, and we even got the downtown scapes we all love as a backdrop!
