Reflections:: Life Learning

“The only way to really learn is to do.”

I had multiple internships after I graduated from college, and all of them were in the field of photography.  I tried everything.  Table-top photography, editorial photography, studio photography, to both wedding and family photography.  I didn’t know so many sub-fields could exist or all the positions that were held within just photography! So I completely resonate with this quote.  Keep doing what you love and connecting with those you follow and! Being a life long learner can only benefit you and those around you.

    Reflections:: July

    Agh, I just love July.  If you know me at all, you know I just love the heat, and with little of it throughout the year, July seems to be the one month that is the constant with it’s upper temps and sunshine.

    I actually told my husband the other day, that I wish I had a July birthday.  Think of all the water activities that could have been done and the party with your school friends you could have.  November just seems to be the month its drab and cold and panning a birthday party outside in Minnesota is just a chance most aren’t willing to take!!

    Not only are there numerous water and outdoor activities, can we also talk about the late nights spent playing outside, talking to neighbors, the smell of fresh cut grass and wearing flip flops all day long?!

    But I digress.

    So even though I will be working this weekend, you better bet, I will be out in the heat and sun doing it!

      Reflections:: Spring

      Every winter after the Holiday’s finish, I start dreaming of spring and summer.  In Minnesota spring is hard to come by. The months of March and April can be beautiful one day and then disaster the next!  This spring I have a few personal projects I am hoping to complete by the end of May.

      1. My biggest undertaking and one that I have been dreaming about for the past few years, is getting a box garden into place.  After woking with my kids and a teacher at their school for the past few years in their Junior Master Gardner plan, I finally put mine to paper.  Granted this year, I might only have one garden, I am starting slowly and planning for things that hopefully won’t die or get eaten by the pesky bunnies!
      2. Planning out my entire summer.  As you know I love lists and planning.  I also love planning for the fun things we will get to do as a family.  Camps, sports, the Minnesota State Fair and some day trips around the state are on the agenda, as is our big family vacation (of course it includes waterslides and being outdoors as much as possible!)
      3. Employing my kids.  See my insta stories recently?  My 13 year old has taken it over and she is running with it.  My 11 year old will be assembling welcome gifts and writing thank you’s, while my 9 year old son will be mowing and taking care of the yard.  All of them will have daily chores that they already do, but going above and beyond will help them all understand the work that goes into owning a business and working in tandem to make the summer months go well for the all of us. It helps that they will all be paid for these activities too…

      How will spring look for you? Are you a planner?  Have any trips or gardening tips?  I would LOVE to hear more.  Drop me a line, I’d love to hear more about them!

        Reflections:: Friday Nights

        Before we had kids, Friday nights were so much fun.  We would grab dinner somewhere in the city, trying out a nw restaurant, walk around talking about our day, stay in for a movie night or just shoot the breeze.

        These nights completely changed once we had kids.  We struggled to find a baby-sitter or even find the energy to go out and stay awake!

        Now we are slowly able to get back into enjoying Friday nights again as our kids become teenagers.  Sometimes we all as a family head out to eat, or Kevin and I get a date night in while our oldest baby-sits. It is crazy to think that we are at this stage of life, but let me tell you, it is pretty great.

        Happy Friday to you in whatever you are doing!

          Reflections on winter…

          Growing up in Minnesota I have come to love all of the seasons… well mostly.  If my kids were to ask me what is my favorite season would be, it would most definitely be summer.  Mostly because I love the heat, the long days of summer, the way our entry way is actually cleared of stuff, but mainly the ease of they way summer works.  Fall, then spring come next and always in dead last comes winter.

          But this year, I have been making my peace with winter.  I have had a chance to rest.  Really rest.  The amount of events and shoots on my calendar goes from a full speed sprint, to a nice leisurely stroll.  Mind you , I still hate the cold and negative temps and spastic snow storms, but slowing down has done wonders for me, my family and the business.

          Taking time away from shooting has allowed me to do other things that I forget that I love. Reading, going out with friends and family, playing in the snow, cross country skiing again (yes, I used to ski competitively in high school!) cooking, snowshoeing, and getting my house ready for the next season of crazy has my blood pressure back to normal!

          And so winter and I have made amends.  We aren’t quite besties yet, but I am learning to grow in my appreciation for this season and maybe one day we will be even closer.
