Bringing dinner (or lunch!) to the table

We hiked up and down the aisles of Home Depot looking for tomato plants, basel plants, bean and pea seeds and a big ol’ bag of dirt!  Upon putting soil and seeds into the pots, I had no idea if our potted garden would work.  Coming from a long line of wanna be farmers  my mom taught me the dedication of planing seeds, watering them, watching them grow, and of course harvesting them!  It always brought me a sense of accomplishment when we sat at the dinner table eating the green beans my sisters and I helped plant!  I wanted to bring that sense of accomplishment to my kids and they got it  last week!  Our tomatoes had become red, the plants flowered and beans were waiting to be picked.  So I set the girls loose and the rest went straight to our belly’s!

Celebrating our freedom and making memories

Growing up, the 4th of July was always a sweet time spent with my late grandmother.  Because we lived so far away and were only able to see her once a year, the visit was much awaited for on both ends.  The drive down to the small southern Illinos town was always an adventure and a dreadfully L-O-N-G car ride.   We knew what was awaiting us, so we filled the time with car games, sisterly gossip (and fighting) and listening (laughing) to the crazy hick town stations as we passed through.

Upon our arrival, my grandmother would greet us with warm kisses and long hugs.  Her skin always smelled of Elizabeth Arden “Diamonds” and was so incredibly soft.  In the background,  John Phillips Sousa would be playing on the radio.  After our greeting, no matter if we were hungry or not, sandwiches or sweets were served followed by discussions of how tall we were getting, and stories of when she was growing up.  As the day continued, the aroma of popcorn filled the air as my mom would put it in a paper sack, prep lemonade and gather lawn chairs.  As dusk fell, we would all pile into our green Wind-star to head out to the county fair.   Amongst the crowds we would find my uncle playing his black clarinet in the local band shell with the other members of the band.  Following the vast array of American music (of each song my grandma would either humm or sing to!) and as the mosquitoes came to pray on the audience, one large BOOM came followed by beautiful glittery patches of greens, blues, reds and golds.

As a kid, it was a magical moment of being surrounded by those who loved and cared for me.  As we huddled near each other in our sweats gobbling popcorn and ooohing and aaahing at the flashes of light we not only were celebrating our freedom, we were making memories.

Today I will pack up my family, head out to watch the booms and glitter, cover ears, and pop popcorn with my own family.  We’ll set up the lawn chairs and fight off the misquotes in our sweats, play John Phillips Sousa, remember my grandmother and continue to make memories.

    Happy 4th!

      Welcome summer

It is hard to believe that this school year is over.  For what has happened in this past school year has been a whirlwind and completely sanctifying for our family.  Some milestones:

      1) We now have a set routine of wake up and bed-time

      2) We live on the edges of the country, and we actually like it!

      3) I no longer have any kid in diapers.

      4) All three of my kids have given up naps completely.

      5) The neighborhood kids have invaded my life, and I love it!

      6) Next fall I will have only one child left at home, what will I do with all my free time?!

      7) We have grown closer to our church family in distance and in sharing our lives with them.

8 ) The tooth fairy has visited the house 7 times.

      9) Lydia went from recognizing letters to reading chapter books (and is now on the mission to get an American Girl doll, oh help!)

      10) I see how God is continually making changes in my life and pushing me to the next level.

I can’t wait to see what He does next school year, but for today, we welcome summer and a soon to be second grader, kindergartener and pre-schooler!

        Summer lovin

I know, I know.  We are not quite into summer, but here in MN it sure feels like it!  Kevin and I talk with his family a lot about how we Minnesotans talk about the weather all. the. time.  If you live here, you know why.  The weather affects us on a daily basis.  It can change at the turn of a dime and go from super hot and sticky, to cold and rainy.  Our plans revolve around it and our moods change because of it.  The other day, I was basking in the warmth of the sun and thinking about how much I love summer, and saw a blog post coming to fruition.  Here are some of my top favorite things about summer, not just the physical items, but because of what they represent.

The red bag: This wonderful free bag I scored one year at the state fair holds all our sand toys.  The beach is one of our favorite places in the summer.  I remember as a kid, my mom taking us to the beach on a weekly basis.  I am trying to instill that love for the water into my kids too.

Salads! Cooking becomes minimal in the Feder home during the summer.  Grilling and salads take the place of soups and pasta.

Tank tops:  My crazy closet becomes alive with my favorite summer top.  Begrudging thinking about dressing the kids in sweats, shoes and socks, and bulky coats just to go to the gorcery store is replaced by the ease of putting on a tank and shorts and slipping on flip flops.  What was once a 10 minute task, now becomes a 2 minute hit!

Sunscreen.  Replacing my make up with only sunscreen brings joy to my heart.

The Purple Plastic Pool.  I blogged about this crazy pool before, but really what this pool represents is the youth of my kids, and the constant joy that they bring me throughout the summer.  A pool that my kids have totally outgrown continues to be used for all things ranging from a pool for the Polly pockets, a car wash for the matchbox cars, a bathtub when thy pretend to play dogs, and a resource to pull from when daddy needs to be splashed with water.

What are some of your favorites about summer?  I’d love to hear them!  Bring them all on, we in Minnesota are ready to love on you summer!!

        • Kar! Love this post! Summer is such a fun, freeing time–especially with young kids. I made a list of all the fun things I want to do with the kids this summer for those days when I need ideas (http://www.lundeenscene.com/2012/05/summer-dreams.html) but some of my favs are: throw water balloons, host a cousin campout, go to the splash pad, bike to the drive-in for dinner, build a sand castle, make homemade jam, watch a movie in the park and wade in the waterfall in Osceola. Hope to see you and your kids lots this summer!

        Playing for a living

Do you really love your job?  Does it excite you?  Make you passionate, inspire you?  Do you hit the alarm clock ready to do what you love?

Know that this is not an everyday occurrence to me, but I am glad I don’t hate my job.  To be perfectly honest, I am not a morning person, but I get to play with kids, interact with couples, be inspired, cry and laugh.  These are all in my job description, and I absolutely love what I do.

Before the eara of my own kids and as I was trying to establish my photo business I taught pre-scool part time.  I was an art major and had very little experience teaching, but I loved kids and  interacting with them.   I was brought into their world for a few hours a day and tried to see through their eyes.  I look back on that time with fond memories of 3, 4 and 5 year olds, because they taught me so many things.  Little did I know the following year I would become a mother and that 8 years down the line I would be photographing and playing with different tots on a weekly basis!

Special thanks to my friend Angie as she grabbed my camera and shot some photos of me playing with her 4 year old, Nora!
