Lydia:: Plymouth Newborn Session

It’s hard to believe that at one point I did not care to take newborn photos.  I think because I was under the impression that they had to be the Anne Geddies babies, with cute outfits and hats and wraps on.  Now don’t get me wrong, I adore those photos, but Newborn sessions like that take a lot of time.  You can not tell a baby when to sleep, you simply must wait. Now though, I have let myself be more free when photographing newborns and this is what a lifestyle newborn session entails.  There is less of that pressure to get baby sleeping, but the flexibility to photograph the baby and family in their own environment as they are interacting together.

Sweet little Lydia was a joy to photograph. Not only did I love this session because she shares the name of my oldest daughter, but I was able to photograph Jenny and Matt’s wedding last year and to see them enter into this beautiful stage of parenthood was a complete and utter joy!

How to shoot wedding details quickly

One of my very favorite parts of the wedding day is gathering all the details and taking some time to photograph them to add to the storyline of the day in the album or for my blog posts.  Typically I allow for 30-40 minutes of shooting, but many times I can be in a crunch.  So what to do when you are in a pinch with time and how do you shoot those details quickly? Today I have some tips for you!

    1. Plan ahead!  Connect with the bride a week in advance and have her put together a bag that will contain her shoes, jewelry, stationary, hanky, veil, flowers, perfume, and any other details that she wants photographed.  I typically will have a personal attendant or family member meet me at the location where the ladies are getting dressed to have her bring along the dress and rings.
    2. Find a neutral location that is well lit.  Windows can be your best friend when shooting details.  I will typically grab a chair and use the dress or veil as a backdrop.  Wood or concrete floors can also be awesome to use as the backdrop as can textured chairs or benches.
    3. Have an assistant or family member help you.  If that personal attendant or family member that brought you the details is still available, put her to use.  Have her hold the dress, bring in flowers, pull out stationary and be another hand to help arrange details.
    4. Start big, then go small!  To ensure I get all the details that a bride asks for, I start with a photo of all the details together, and then do each object alone or with another item!
    5. Don’t forget about the men! Shoes, watches, flasks, cigars, tie clips, socks, rings, boutonniere’s, etc can all be photographed and are just as important to the day!
    6. Use the timer on your phone. Often I can get caught up in this part of the day because I love all the pretty little details! I typically allow for this time in my time line, but I still need to remind myself that the timeline must continue and by setting a timer on my phone, I am able to keep myself on time!

Do you have any tips and tricks you have learned along the way?  I would love to hear them!!

Calen and Tom:: Carver Park Engagement Session

In the middle of snow and cold, I’m taking you back today with an engagement session from a warm fall day!  Tom and Calen chose a neutral location in a park near her parents home to enjoy the beautiful fall color as well as enjoy the warmth of the day!  Because both Tom and Calen love the lakes, we wanted to make sure to be around water and capture them enjoying it!  I can not wait for their September wedding day and only hope it is this beautiful!

Goal Setting :: 2018 Personal Goals

I love living in the first week of January!  There is something about everything being new and fresh and exciting about turning a new page.  This week I have been sharing 2018 goals, so thanks for sticking around.  If you have not checked out Power Sheets yet, head on over to the site and see if they might be right for you!  I am loving mine and hope to stick with them throughout the year!

Yesterday I shared my business goals, but today I want to share my five personal goals I will be working on for quarter one of the 2018 year.

          • Connect weekly with extended family.  This can with be by text, phone calls, letters, or personal interaction with them.
          • Get a regular exercise routine down, and include kids in it
          • Create box gardens for my home, plan and build in quarter 1, plant in quarter 2, harvest in quarter 3, evaluate in quarter 4.
          • Continue on with my Bible Reading through Studies (She Reads Truth is my favorite now and I just began a study on hospitality that is rocking my world)
          • Finish completely re-doing Elise’s room (Painting, new furniture for my almost 11 year old by the end of February!)
          • Put together photo books for my family!
          • Date night once a month with Kevin

Again, yikes.  These goals feel so personal it is hard to even write them because I know there are some people reading this that will be affected and will ASK me about these things!  But these are things I have prayed over and felt led to really work on in my personal life!   What will you be making happen in your personal life this year?  I would love to hear more, feel free to leave a comment below or shoot me an e-mail!  I would love to be able to help you stick to your goals!
