What to wear for family sessions

Happy fall to you, and with that, happy family photo time!  At this point in the year there are so many mommas asking me for clothing suggestions for family photos.  While I am no clothing expert, I have learned a few things along the way and want to share with you today four tips to choosing the type of clothing to wear for your family photos!

  1. This is the biggie and most important… As the momma, start with you.  Find the dress, jeans and jacket, t-shirt or style that YOU feel most comfortable in and feel confidant in and start there.  Often times we choose what our kids want to wear and work around them, but most of the time, kids are pretty flexible in what they want to wear, so choose that outfit you love the most and then work everyone around you.
  2. Bring in the accessories!  You can make any dark blue shirt better by adding a jean jacket, gold neckace or scarf to the mix.  Add in earrings, bangles and shoes to add your flair to the photos.  I will preface this with thinking about your kiddos too.  (In as much as we love dolling them up, be aware that if your toddler hates headbands, chances are she won’t keep it in for the photo, so it might be wise to forget it and elivate the stress!)
  3. Stay away from too much matching.  Gone are the days of denim shirts and kackki pants ( think 1999 and Gap ads!) Mixing and matching, adding plads and stripes , but not too many, and bringing in textures makes you pop in photos.
  4. Take tips from the clothing industry.  Step into any store these days and you will know the styles and colors that are on trend.  Jewel tones and neutrals photograph well against the green trees as well as the changing foliage that comes in October.
  5. If all else fails, Pinterest.

Feel free to reach out as needed!  Again, I am no clothing expert, but I am happy to help and guide in any way I can as you prepare for your session.  I can’t wait to see so many of you this fall!

    Reflections:: Back to school

    So here it is.  The month we as mommas wait for, the month of September that we send our kids back to school. The first week there are new schedules, new routines, backpacks, and clothes. There is a joy and a gift in starting over in these new routines, but there is also a sadness in that summer is over and routines, are just that… routines.

    There is a beauty in starting school.  I do actually like that we bring routine back to our schedules, and that there is a newness about the season that is changing. I love that my kids get to be with friends again and all the great activities that they are involved in start up again.  There is also the joy that the are being challenged mentally again and thinking through how to organize their day.

    But there is the hardship and sadness that is felt in this second week of school. We have already felt it in the getting to bed earlier and waking up earlier.  In getting homework done and making sure lunches are made before bounding out the door to the fall activities.  There is the stopping in the middle of the day for me to pick up kids from school and momentum being lost.  There is the fact that we aren’t seeing each other as much and being tired and all the emotions that come along with that.  There is also that thought that winter is closer than these warm days of summer, and if I’m really being honest, I am not excited for that at all!

    So in as much as I love the start and routine of school, there are a few things that I don’t love about it.  What about you?  In this second week of school and new routines, how are you feeling about it?  In love, or not so much, or just mixed emotions like me??

      Green Acres Event Center Wedding:: Calen and Tom

      It was St. Patrick’s day and both Calen and Tom were out with friends at The Press, a quaint local bar in St. Cloud.  Both of them had been drug out with friends for the evening and connected after finding similar interests in their love for vacationing on the beach and shooting guns! They quickly began dating and after a few years of dating Tom surprised Calen one night by making her  favorite dinner, homemade lasagna, and proposed after dinner.

      After a year of planning their wedding day finally happened.  September weather in the midwest is incredible, warm days with low humidity and cool nights, perfect for gathering around the bonfire for catching up with friends and having s’mores.  After tying the knot at St. Andrew’s Lutheran church in Eden Prairie, Calen and Tom headed back to Green Acres, a quaint event center in Eden Prairie for dinner and dancing.

      The unique stationary that Kellyn McNaught from Stells Designs created was paired beautifully with the rings from Riddle’s Jewelry when put together for a flat lay.Friends and family came from miles away to celebrate with the couple. Calen was ravishing in her lace ivory Matthew Christopher gown from Posh Bridal and her American Rag flats from Macy’s were the perfect fit for her ensamble.
      Tom and his groomsmen sported navy suits from Macy’s while Courtney Thompson and Caiti Shoutz created a look or Calen where her true beauty shone. Her stunning bridesmaids wore ivory floor length satan gowns from The Wedding Shoppe, while their white and green florals Bridget from Pretty Petals stood out against the dresses.
      Sterling catering provided guests with meals of chicken and beef while Buttercream brought in a decatant fudge chocolate cake and cake squares for guest to enjoy.Midwest Sound kept the music going through the evening while guests enjoyed drinks and s’mores on the patio!

      Calen and Tom, you are such a kind and caring couple.  It was a gift to spend the day with you and I wish you both joy and happiness as you walk down this new road of marriage together!
