Friday Fun: Out takes

So we all have them, even photographers.  I just get to show you my good stuff, but here are some of the things that I deal with on a regular shoot.

1) Screaming babies.  Yes, they all do it, and they are so darn cute.  So mommies, if I am ever photographing your newest addition, don’t feel bad.  It pretty much happens at every newborn session and I do like to take their photo…even if it is for your blackmailing purposes when they are 15!

2) Non-cooperative pets or kids.  In the past few years of having my own kids, I have learned that dogs are much like them.  All you need is some kind of distraction, and you have their attention again…. even if it takes photographing their stuffed monkey.

3) Props not working the way you intended.  On a few engagement shoots I thought it would be fun to incorporate some balloons…. um probably not the best idea when the wind was 20!! miles an hour.  I should have thought about that before the shoot, oh well!

4) Fish eye mistakes.  Yes these are my children and I take full responsibility in photographing them this way.  We were having such a great time with this lens.  I think I laughed until I cried.  But in all seriousness, I would never recommend photographing someone this close, unless you are wanting them to look like they just came from the circus.

5) Clients… You will get a work out if you choose me to be your photographer.  The top shot was the goal I was wanting to achieve, but it took about 3-4 tries of Wade jumping in the air to get the desired look.

6) The bolting kid.  Yes, I do get a work out as well.  Here is the series of a 2 year old.  Here one minute, gone the next.

Going..Going….Gone!

7) The “I’m all done” phrase.  As the photographer, I’ve gotta be fast, especially when this phrase comes out, or a baby will be falling! (i think his parents had this phrase memorized because they were ready to catch the baby before he fell!  I love it!)

8)  Exhausted baby.  Here is where we stop the shoot and bring out the puffs, or bottle, or call it a day!

After all the screaming, crying, laughing, running and walking, it is all worth it to get the desired photo for the client.  I love what I do, and have a great time doing it!

Have a great weekend!

    Friday fun: random favorites

Being a photographer in Minneapolis is so seasonal, as the warmer weather affords for more outdoor activities, and more weddings and family portraits are scheduled.  This month I specifically set aside some time to enjoy the summer and my family.  I decided to not shoot any weddings this month so that I had some weekends that were free to do summer activities, and get geared up for the fall.  Here are some really random summer favorites that I pulled for today’s blog.

    1) Attending a wedding… as a guest!  In June our family was invited to a wedding that I was a guest at.  It was wonderful to attend and get all dressed up for (one of my favorite things to do).  We basked in the “I do’s” and the company of friends.  Of course I had to bring the camera, but more for the sake of getting a photo of the kids dressed up together!

    2) I have been in the process of re-decorating my house.  Here is a site that has been inspiring me called Ruffles and Ramblings.  I just think these two sisters have some really creative ideas.

    Happy weekend!

      Friday Fun: Local vendors

I love Minneapolis.  It is one of my favorite places. Before we had kids we lived right downtown and now we are in one of the first ring circles of the Cities.  All that said, there are so many wonderful vendors in this city.  I have been fortunate to meet many along the way in weddings, and some have just been referred to me.  Here are some Minneapolis based vendors that I highly recommend:

      1) Eat Drink Pretty: Jenna and her hubby are located in Minneapolis and a bride of mine referred me here to DIY wedding info and great recipes.  I would love to meet this woman one day, I was so inspired by her blog.  I wanted to get married all over again to use some of these great ideas.

      2) Sarah Pikl at the Raddison downtown.  She and her staff are AMAZING to work with, and the venue is beautiful.  Let me know if you are interested in this wonderful venue and I will pass her info along.

And 3) Pam McCarthy-Kern at Flurissima.  Beautiful flowers do not say enough!  Her art work at Jackie and Vineet’s wedding was beyond words.  I do hope to work with her again in the future, plus she and her assistant were so sweet.

If you are a vendor interested in having your site and info displayed on a future Friday, please e-mail me with your information and ideas!

Have a great 4th!  I’ll be back on Tuesday.  Taking the long weekend and resting.  Hope you’ll do the same!

        Friday Fun: things I love

I thought I’d do a themed day, just to make the blog more alive.  At times, I have brides as well as photographers asking me questions on a spew of different things.  Hopefully this can help the bride, family and photographer in the future.  And look for more Friday Fun as the year progresses!

This blog is dedicated to the things I love:

        1) Great and fabulous wedding sites.  One that I recently stumbled upon is Utterly Engaged.  It is actually an on-line wedding magazine (Great way to go green!)  I love looking through the pages at the variety of different weddings all over the country.  They are great about showing a real wedding and then posting the budget to that wedding.  Check them out for more planning advise!

        2) the Farmers Market!  In Minnesota summer is a very short season and heading out to the local Farmer’s Market to support local vendors is one of my favorite places to spend my money and my time.

        3) White House Custom Color.  They are truly amazing at what they do.  The turn around time is fast, they deliver to my door (great perk with for photogs with kids!), and a blow pop comes with each order!

        4) Details of the wedding day.  One of my favorite things is when there are these wonderfully small, but very much thought through, details that just make the wedding day more unique.

And 5) The exit!  No greater joy to a couple than being pronounced husband and wife.  The looks are priceless.

        Have a great weekend!

          The Bright Side Project

The Bright Side Project (see web site HERE) is my newest obsession.  It is a wonderful tool for my creative juices and a great way to enter to WIN prizes.  Forgive me this is WAAAY off the topic of photography, but it is a very fun site just to burn some time at, and refuel  the creativity!  Enjoy!
