Landmark Wedding:: Rachel & Dan

When Dan returned from studying abroad in India, he didn’t expect to meet his soul mate.  Dan and Rachel shared mutual friends and when the two took a social dance class together at Gustavus in the fall of 2012, the two became fast friends and started dating not long after that.

After finding many of the same loves; camping, being active, going out to eat, and perusing all the finest breweries in the Twin Cities together, Dan knew this was the girl he wanted to marry.  He strategically planned for the two to go hiking together and while along the scenic trails he would propose. Rachel, on the other hand, was not going for it.  Little did she know that she was going to be proposed to and insisted that they travel to Duluth.  Dan rolled with the punches, and while the two were strolling along the shores of Lake Superior on a May afternoon, they stopped at a park to take in the view of the city.  As Rachel was turned the other way, Dan got down on one knee and as she turned back to him, found him asking her to marry him.  She responded with a resounding yes, and the two spent the rest to the day together walking, calling family and friends and trying two new breweries!

Their wedding day was just as beautiful.  Surrounded by family and friends from all over the world, the two were wed in the historic Landmark Center of St. Paul.  Their summer evening wedding could not have been more comfortable as the couple walked around the streets of Rice Park and along the river for photos.  Rachel’s elegant satan Allure dress was stunning against Dan’s Josph Abbound grey suit.  The violet and green bouquets from Florals by Claire added a stunning pop of color against the purple bridesmaid dresses from the Wedding Shoppe.  Rachel and Dan both added heirloom pieces of jewelry to their day.  Pearl earrings that Rachel’s mother on her wedding day, her necklace was her paternal grandmother’s and her bracelet was her maternal grandmother’s and a tie Clip that Dan’s grandfather passed on to him.  Their ceremony was inside the Landmark Center and guests were invited to share in the festivities of dinner provided by BRIE catering and dancing DJ’d by Fulton Productions.

Rachel and Dan, it was an honor to spend your day with you.  Thank you for making me feel like an old friend, have a wonderful time celebrating and relaxing on the shores of Lake Superior!

Sarah & Flip:: A Countryside Wedding

Some days (or proposal days) don’t always go as planned.

What Flip planned for Sarah was an incredible evening.  On the Friday after the couple celebrated their one year anniversary, he would make dinner for her and then would present her with an anniversary gift: an anthology of the Enchanted Forest Chronicles, a childhood book series by one of Sarah’s favorite authors, Patricia Wrede. In this book, Flip had the author sign the book, but not just any signature, he had the author sign “Sarah, will you marry Flip?”  He would then present the book to her and propose on the spot with her grandmother’s  vintage wedding ring.

Joyfully, he picked up the restored and resized wedding ring earlier in the afternoon and because Sarah’s parents had asked if he had gotten insurance on the ring, he wanted to be the good son-in-law and quickly texted them to let them know everything had gone according to plan.

About five minutes later, he got a reply from Sarah, asking if the previous text had been meant for her.

Knowing that plans must quickly be rethought, Flip took action to propose right away.  He headed to her apartment and showed up on her doorstep, book and ring in hand.  He present flowers and the book to her and while she was reading the inscription, he dropped to one knee and when Sarah looked up from reading, she responded with a yes!

Their wedding day was much more in line with the June weather and wedding day.  Based in the small town of Nowthen, not far from where Sarah grew up, the couple exchanged vows in the quaint church.  Blue Orchard Creations provided beautiful blooms for their wedding occasion while Famous Daves catered the event.  Sarah’s gown looked stunning on her while her beautiful bridesmaids made a romantic statement in their lavender Henkaa Dresses. The heat didn’t keep us from being outside, it just added to the beauty of the elegance of the countryside wedding.  Friends and family from all over the US celebrated with the couple making it a joyful day for all involved!

Sarah and Flip, thank you for including me in your wedding day.  You are kind, thoughtful and joyful people to be around.  I wish you joy and happiness as you start your adventure into married life!  Much love and blessings to you both!

Minneapolis Golf Club Wedding:: Anne & Will

It was homecoming and a day full of joyous celebrating and fall festivities at Iowa State.  Anne and her sorority sisters were there along with Will and his frat brothers.  Because they had many mutual friends, the two began talking and hit it off right away.  After a few weeks of hanging out,  Will asked Anne if she wanted a ride home for Thanksgiving because both were from the Minneapolis area.  She agreed and when they arrived to the Cities and after a great car ride of conversation and laughs, the two realized they had grown up only ten minutes apart from one another.

When they graduated, they continued dating even though Will took a job out in New York and Anne stayed back in the Minneapolis area.  After many trips out East, it became harder and harder to say goodbye.  Will then transferred to Pennsylvania, and after months of being apart, Anne longed to be with her soul mate. After much thought and may tough goodbyes to close friends and family, Anne moved to the quaint and historic city they would call home for a mere 10 months before getting transferred back the mid-west to Kansas City, MO.

During the summer months, the couple decided to travel to Arkansas for a weekend of hiking and being outdoors.  While walking through a beautiful countryside of waterfalls, caves, and breathtaking views, Will stopped at the edge of a cliff.  Anne, trying to take in the entire scene hardly noticed Will dropping to one knee to ask her to be his wife!  With a resounding yes, she agreed!

Being that Our Lady of Grace was the place her parents were married at, there was no question in Anne’s mind that this would be the place she and Will would be wed.  Their May wedding day was filled with perfection.  Class and emotions were seen throughout the day in all the details from her grandmother’s rosary to the men’s bow ties to the roses that were brought down the aisles to show remembrance of those that had passed.  Anne’s ivory gown from Posh Bridal was elegant against the blush bridesmaid dresses. Ever After Floral prepared the most romantic Rose and Peony bouquets, while Burly’s Hair salon hosted the women as they were getting ready.  After the ceremony, their energetic, (amazing, sweet, incredible, fun)  wedding party traveled by trolley in GrayLines to the Stone Arch Bridge in Minneapolis where we captured some of Minneapolis’ beautiful and historic cobblestone streets and architecture. The Minneapolis Golf Club was the perfect place of elegance and grace to hold their reception. Instant Request brought down the house with a fabulous night of dancing while International Cigars rolled cigars for guests at the cigar bar!

Anne and Will, you are truly amazing and kind people.  Your family, friends and wedding party made me feel as though we have known each other for years. You are kind, warm hearted, caring and beautiful people. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this incredible day with you.  Enjoy your time in St. Lucia!!

How to put together a styled shoot:: Part two, making it happen

Yesterday I shared a little bit about how to start with the pre-planning process of putting a styled shoot together. Today I want to share 12 steps you might take if you are planning on putting together your own styled shoot!

Wedding at Tattersall Distillery in Minneapolis MN by Karen Feder Photography

        1.  Meet with a planner if possible. Planners know so many different people and are an extremely valuable resource. If you  don’t know a planner personally, my suggestion would be to reach out directly to a planner with an idea and vision for your shoot.
        2.  Book an event space. Again, planners know so many different people and spaces. If you are able to nail down a planner, find an event space that will fit your overall theme together.  Offer photos in exchange for the use of their space.  Most venues are happy to do this for photographers, but some are unable to.  If you can, offer to pay something for the space, that way the venue coordinator knows that you are serious. If you are unable to have a planner help you, reach out through your own networks to see if there is a space you could use, and if worse comes to worse, doing the shoot outdoors is always an option.  My only suggestion would be to have a plan B in case of inclement weather.
        3. Think of a theme. Find what the color of the year is and work around that to style your shoot, highlight an event space in your city that you would love to work in, work through a trend that you love seeing and want to photograph more. Whatever it is, make sure you go into the shoot knowing what you want to highlight and the style that you want to portray.
        4.  Use social media to connect.  Finding and asking other creative’s in your social networks can be a great way to look at work, highlight work, and meet other creatives. It can also be a place where you can search for models or event spaces.
        5.  Meet with all vendors to discuss your vision. Once you have nailed down all the vendors that you will be working with, get drinks or coffee together to collaborate and get on the same page before the actual shoot date.  This can also be helpful when talking to the other vendors to ask what they are looking for and would like to use for their own marketing purposes. Remember, this isn’t just about you, it’s about connection and highlighting other vendors in your area; give freely.
        6. Follow through with emails to vendors. Once you have met, make sure your vendors know you are still thinking about them. Before the shoot happens, get all social media handles and put together a spreadsheet of contact information as well as Facebook and Instagram pages.  Coming up with a hashtag that is focused around your theme can also be helpful for SEO for when the shoot is finished and everybody wants to repost.
        7.  Photograph the event
        8.  Follow up with a few photos the day after the shoot while everyone is still excited so that vendors can share to their own social platforms.
        9.  Be generous in sharing. When vendors ask for certain pictures from the event, share with them joyfully and quickly.  Excitement will be shared, and all vendors will be happy that you highlighted them.
        10.  Don’t forget smaller vendors. Paper company’s, wedding dress designers, bridesmaid dress designers, men’s attire, models names and companies, flower farms, etc. Anyone that can be highlighted from the shoot, highlight. Everyone is happy to share your photos on all of their platforms to highlight their work, and this makes for great (free!) advertising for them and you!
        11.  Send thank you’s. Everyone likes a handwritten note and an acknowledgment that they were a part of somethinhg.
        12.  If you love it, do it again!

I know that was a super quick rundown of how a styled shoot might be executed, if you have questions or want to be a part of a fall shoot with me, or have any other ideas to share, feel free to comment below.  I would love to connect!!
