Vendor Feature:: Mackenzie Events and Consulting

I have just been loving these interviews with vendors these past few months!  Many of them I have known before while some I have just met within the past year.  Whomever it is, I am learning and being inspired by incredible women in the wedding industry, I hope you are too!

Mackenzie and I met at her sister’s wedding.  She was the maid of honor. This past week we talked and she reminded me that the way we actually connected was when she invited me to sit and eat at the reception.  I was a little unsure because I was the hired help, but she insisted that I eat, and not just at any table, but with and with her sweet family!  As we chatted, I realized we had much in common. She too was in the wedding industry as a wedding planner. We had children that were the same age, both shared the same faith, and we both loved connecting with people!

Fast forward a few years and I was able to take family photos for her, and when I approached her this winter on putting together a styled shoot, she was all over it!  She was the spark plug that I needed to get me through the MN winter and connect me with other incredible vendors.  I’m so glad I was able to interview her this month.

Meet Mackenzie!!

How long have you been in business? I have had my own event company for 4 years, but in the event industry for 17 years. I started in Corporate Events working only with Fortune 500 companies, moved into the non-profit sector, and now planning and operating small business events, celebrations and weddings with my own company. With this variety of experience I know how to work with a variety of clients and vendors!

Why or how did you get started in your industry? I have been planning events since I was a kid. I was the person in high school that led the charge in planning for the “Spring Flings” and Homecoming activities. Planning and executing events never stressed me out. I loved seeing the end-result, getting a team around a common cause, and helping people to build community and have fun.

What 3 words describe your work? Relational, Detailed, Client Driven (She also told me later… clipboard!)

What have weddings taught you? Interesting question. Weddings are not my bread and butter, but I do have wedding clients every year. I look at my job as helping the bride and groom, and the mother of the bride sit back and enjoy the day without looking around wondering if something is going to happen at the right time and in the right fashion. There is something magical that can happen with a group of people come together for a common purpose, cause, person or couple. We have all been to weddings or events and left thinking – that was the best! You don’t totally know why, but it was a blast. Conversely, we have been to weddings or events and are left thinking, there was something off tonight. That feeling comes from very little details not coming together just right. It is my job, and my pleasure, to insure that the money that clients spend on their event is used well and that the details are perfectly orchestrated.

I’m telling you, and people may not want to hear this, but all the things that we worry about prior to the big day really fade into the background the day of. What I love at weddings – and what I think people remember – is meaningful speeches from the Father of the Bride or any relative to the bride and groom Sincerity and loving words about the bride and groom leave a lasting impression on the guests and give a window into their families of origin – I love that.

What have events taught you? Events in general, have taught me is, don’t freak out – it is all going to be okay. My positive attitude and experience is something I bring to the table with my clients. Over 17 years I have seen it all. I was working an event on September 11th, I’ve flown out of a hurricane with clients, I’ve arrived to a venue and the food isn’t prepared at all, I’ve worked in places where there are language barriers, I’ve worked at events where there is a medical emergency and on and on. I keep a cool head, and find the best solution to the problem – calling on the help of fellow suppliers when needed. Guests look to the event planner to see how they should be feeling, so keeping a calm face and demeanor helps to set the tone in situations that are unplanned.   I also know the value of having wonderful working relationships with all the vendors hired for an event. I introduce myself to servers, doormen, and musicians so they know who to come to if they need anything. Events go best when the team is working well together!

What is your style? I am positive, detailed, personable, fun, hard-working and always trying to find a way to save the client money.

What are some sources of inspiration or influences on your work? I have the gift of hospitality and I love to build community. Our home is open to friends and family weekly and it is something that we feel passionate about. My faith inspires my work because I believe that we were made for relationships and community. I want to help others be able to host events and make their guests feel comfortable and at home and build that sense of community. I stress to all of my clients that what truly helps people have fun at an event is feeling comfortable and welcomed. I can support a host/hostess in this goal by taking care of the details so they can be focused on their guests.

Tell me your best or worst wedding advice you received when you got married. Best wedding advice, and something I share with future brides and grooms is, each of you should choose one thing that is important to you and funnel money toward those two things. You can spend tons of money on all the elements of a wedding day, so set your priorities.   Best MARRIAGE advice is go through marriage counseling and make your relationship a priority if you have kids.

I don’t think I got any bad wedding advice or if I did I didn’t listen to it!

Advice you would give to newly engaged couples. Make sure your relationship is solid – get it all out on the table – you don’t want big surprises after you get married. Definitely go to pre-marriage counseling. Also, set a time that you are going to talk about wedding details during the week, don’t talk about it every time you are together. That can be fatiguing and take the joy out of the planning process. Put a date on the calendar for wedding talk and try to stick to that! I tell couples marriage really is amazing – it is a gift. Society sometimes tells us that marriage is like a ball and chain, but it doesn’t have to be. I love being married!

What’s your favorite way to wind down after a hard day? It depends on the day! I have 5 kids on top of my work so sometimes winding down doesn’t happen! But, I try to exercise daily, hang out with my husband and watch a good show, having a glass of wine and talking through the day with my husband or just getting some sleep are all ways I try to wind down.

What sets you apart in your industry or what do your clients say about you?  I am organized, efficient, and very personable to deal with.  I am on top of the event, and I make the entire process fun and easy. Because I value relationships so much, we will be friends by the end of the event process!

And now you know why I love Mackenzie so much.  She is such a real, authentic, person that I hope you get to know some day! If you are looking for an event planner check her out!

    Highlighted Vendor:: Ehr Styling

Happy Thursday to you!  It has been a fabulous month, and along with this month, there have been some amazing vendors that I have been highlighting.  If you missed the past weeks, check out Megan Mary Events and Gunpowder n Gloss that I interviewed a few weeks back!

This week it is my honor to interview a sweet hairstylist Jarae Ehr of Ehr Styling.  She is talented, kind, professional, and extremely timely (which I love and makes it so much easier for my part of the day to begin!) Below are some questions that I was able to ask her.

What 3 words describe your work?
    Quality. Lasting. Personalized.

How long have you been in business?
I have been styling hair for weddings for 4 years and officially started EhrStyling in January of 2016.

Why or how did you get started in your industry?
I have a love for beauty and making each style personalized and perfect. This inspired me to join the wedding industry.

    What have weddings taught you?
Weddings have taught me that in order to be successful, I must listen to the desires, dreams, and aspirations of the bride. They have taught me to be adventurous and bold. They have taught me that there is beauty is every kind of taste, color, and style. Each bride is their own individual chasing their dream for a perfect day. I am here to foster that dream and make it a reality.

    What is your style?
My style is elegant and fun. High quality hair styles that last all day and all night. Up-do, down-do, or somewhere in-between, I want brides to look and feel their best!

What is the best thing you have seen happen on a wedding day?
The best thing I have seen on a wedding day (during the morning hours): When I was styling a bride’s hair and tears streamed down her face as she told me how much she loved her fiancé and how excited she was to marry her best friend.

What is the best thing you have seen happen on a wedding day?
When brides and bridesmaids look at their hair for the first time and get that excited “I LOVE IT” look on their face.

What’s your favorite way to wind down after a hard day?
After every wedding, I treat myself to Chick-fil-a. I don’t care how far away it is, I will find one. I get a Chick-fil-a deluxe sandwich and a small cookies and crème milkshake.

Advise you would give to newly engaged couples.
Enjoy the ride—enjoy planning and getting to know each other better. Make your vendors your friends and be in contact with them if any changes have been made. This will make everyone happier!

What sets you apart in your industry or what do your clients say about you? The goal behind working on-site is to create a memorable experience for each bridal party. I work to create an environment where brides can enjoy every moment of the best day of their life. EhrStyling is professional, affordable, and flexible. We are not just about hair styling, but about fostering an environment where community is enjoyed, laughter is had, and memories are made. I truly want to know the brides, their style, and what makes them tick so I can help them discover the hair style that will make them SHINE!

      Vendor Highlight:: Designs by Rita

Rita and I met a few years back when she was the florist at a wedding I was photographing.  I really admire her work and when I asked if she would help me with a spring maternity session by creating a floral crown, she gladly agreed!   She is a veteran in the floral world and someone I look up to as a business owner.  In the ever-changing world of weddings, sticking around and maintaining quality business is hard to come by.  Rita is the real deal. If you have a minute to check her work out, you will not be disappointed. Below are some questions I asked her to answer!

What are 3 words describe your work?
      Honest, Reasonable, Beautiful

How long have you been in business?
I have been doing flowers for 30 years.

Why or how did you get started in your industry?
I wanted my own business and I love being creative, flowers and weddings seemed like a perfect fit!

      What have weddings taught you?
That traditions change and everyone has their own vision.

      What is your style?
My style is my customers style. I truly try to capture the look they are going for.

What is the best thing you have seen happen on a wedding day?
For me personally as the florist, when the bride is brought to tears when she sees her bouquet for the first time.

What are some sources of inspiration or influences on your work?
Like many, Pinterest. However, my inspiration comes from my customers, their vision and always keeping up to date with designs, themes and color palettes.

What’s your favorite way to wind down after a hard day?
Time spent with family and friends. Maybe some snuggle time with my dogs. Sometimes, getting in my sewing room and finding other ways of being creative.

Best or worst wedding advice you received when you got married?
Best…Always remain friends and laugh together, because at the end of the day…you will need that.

Advice you would give to newly engaged couples.
Continue to go on dates…FOREVER. Remind yourself during the rough times what brought you to this place in your life to begin with and if you feel you lost that…FIND IT AGAIN!

What sets you apart in your industry or what do your clients say about you?
My clients like that I’m up front and honest. I don’t push things upon them, I am here to bring their vision to life and to guide them in that direction. They like the fact that my years of experience not only lies in my floral designs, but in planning and organizing of the event itself.

Be sure to look Rita up Online and on Facebook!

        Highlighted Vendor:: Megan Mary Events

Continuing on with highlighting vendors this season, I want to bring your attention to a sweet and wonderful planner I met last year.  Megan and I worked on a styled shoot together this past week (I can not wait to share more of this!) as well as a styled shoot last fall.  She is a wonderful person and planner.  If you are looking to us a planner for your upcoming wedding, either day of or for the full process, look into using Megan Mary Events.  She is phenomenal and will not disappoint!

I asked her a few questions regarding her business and below are her answers!

What 3 words describe your work?
        Practical. Pretty. Planned.

How long have you been in business?
I have had my own business, Megan Mary Events, for 2.5 years now.

Why or how did you get started in your industry?
I have always loved parties and events. I started as a banquet server in high school and my love for the industry grew from there. In college I coordinate a few banquets and that’s when I realized that I had a knack for the project management of large scale parties. Weddings are such elaborate events, it only made sense to dive in and find out what the need was on the project management and coordination aspect of them. I assisted a couple different planners in the Twin Cities before branching out on my own.

        What have weddings taught you?
Weddings have taught me that nothing in life will ever go completely as planned – there are so many moving pieces, so many small details. It’s all about how you plan for those type of hiccups and then the grace that you have to get through them and move on.

Best or worst wedding advice you received when you got married (if you are married!)
Your Mom is your friend, don’t be mean to her in the planning process! Also, remember that times have changed since she has been married – so her ideas about how the day will go and the cost of it may be a little off.

        What is your style?
My style is modern-traditional. What does that mean? Truthfully, I just made that term up. I love traditional aspects of weddings but I also love when the couple puts their own touches on the day. Personalization is SO trendy right now and for good reason – it helps the guests get in to your life and brings your personalities out for your wedding day.

What is the best thing you have seen happen on a wedding day?
The best thing I have seen on a wedding day… It’s been more than once but I love when the couple’s families are friends and get along like they have known each other forever. And totally cliche, but I love when a groom cries while his bride walks down the aisle to him.

What are some sources of inspiration or influences on your work?
I love using Pinterest as a starting point for a vision. Otherwise, I will often see an outfit someone is wearing or a few cool decor pieces at Home Goods. Those real world experiences are really where a lot of my inspiration comes from.

What’s your favorite way to wind down after a hard day?
Sometimes on wedding days I put in 20,000+ steps, my feet are tired and my brain feels like mush. The morning after an event I love waking up to sunshine, enjoying an espresso on my deck and putting my feet up. I also often enjoy leftover flowers from the event the night before – that’s such a fun perk at the end of the night, getting some flowers to enjoy that week!

What sets you apart in your industry or what do your clients say about you?
I always have an assistant planner on the day of an event. It’s so important to have an extra set of hands – we don’t always know where we might be needed on the day of a wedding! Also, I am very creative and can help with decor, I love playing around with pieces that you want to have together but aren’t quite sure how to lay them out.

Advice you would give to newly engaged couples.
In the grand scheme of things, it’s one day… Of course you want you and your guests to have a great time but remember that the money you spend now, you won’t have later.
