Shoot, shoot, and shoot some more

Recently this week I had the opportunity to meet with a sweet college aged woman who so graciously took me out to coffee to pick my brain on photography.  It seems the older I get, I feel like the less I know!  With the technological world whirling around a 100 miles an hour, the upkeep of social media and just the chaos of the business ( oh and life with three school aged children and all their activities) it is enough to keep my head from rolling off.

I am realizing in this 13th year of being in business that I am not as young as I used to be.  I can not stay up until the wee hours editing, and after working a 10 hour wedding, get this, I am actually sore enough that I need the next day to recover.  I feel like I just ran a marathon.  Reguardless of all this, I LOVE it!!  And I told myself, the day I stop loving photography is the day I stop shooting.

Thankfully my legs are still movin and my arms are still waving and even after a 10 hour day, I am still smiling as I look through post images.

Let me bring you back to this young woman… and to all of you who are just starting out or still have the vigor and energy I had 10 years ago!! (Seriously I am not that old, but sometimes I just feel it, can I get an Amen!!)

One of her questions to me was how do you start to get more weddings?  My answer to her was the answer I received to this question 13 years ago… Just keep shooting.  Whatever it is that you love, weddings, children, nature, families, grads, corporate events, tabletop, whatever it may be, keep it up. Know your camera and your lenses.  And know them well.  Read your manual, look at You Tube videos, ask friends, whatever it may be.  Work hard to get better, and better, and just keep shooting.

Happy Friday!

    Taking on 2015!!

Blogging to say the least has been on the back burner for me this past year and especially this last season of life… and rightly so with all the events that have turned our way this starting in November.  A brief rundown for those who do not follow me on Facebook or Instagram…

November 18th our neighbor’s town home started on fire forcing us to move.  First it was a to a hotel for 3 weeks, than temporary housing for 2 months and then Lord willing, Feb 2, we will move into a new home and stop moving… hopefully.

Add in Thanksgiving, my son’s 6th birthday, finishing up my fall and winter sessions, my grandfather passing away, another good family friend passing away at a young age that same week, Christmas, and New Year’s, I would say that I am giving myself lots of grace to have NOT blogged.

Thankfully my husband has logged pretty much our whole adventure on his blog here.  Read more about the details and our crazy season at your leisure.  We are now slowly working on transitioning into 2015!

To say the least, we were really blessed through 2014, and even though it didn’t end the way we thought it would, God definitely had great plans for the Feder five!  Throughout the fire process we have learned how to go with the flow, be more bold in our faith, give lots of grace while standing up for what we need (because really, we do need a mattress to sleep on that doesn’t reek of smoke!), and look at life in a whole new way and purpose!

We are staring at a blank slate for the year and even though we can plan for things, there are events that will happen that are totally out of our control.  So in the world of resolutions and planning, the one goal I have is to live life purposfully.  Weather that be in being a wife, mom, business owner, or photographer.  I long for meaningful conversations, people to love on and give grace to.  I want to live as Jim Elliot quotes “Wherever you are, be ALL there”.

For this girl, it means putting the phone down when my kids get home from school.  It means making time for good friends either in person or on the phone.  It means pursuing on giving back with photography.  It means going on dates with my husband and not talking about kids or work! It means blogging or posting iPhone photos because it really is ok, really.  It means continuing  to be real and honest with others and letting them into my life. It means focusing on the task at hand when I sit down at the computer and not going all over the place only to forget why I sat down in the first place!  It means having people over for dinner, coffee, or dessert.  It means pursuing Jesus at a deeper level, and it meanks enjoying the life that God has me in RIGHT NOW!

2015, I can’t wait to see what you will hold and I look forward to pursuing you with purpose and meaning!

    • There’s no doubt that life can come throwing stones at you, but never forget that when things go wrong it always come back to being right. Enjoy life and give it purpose. Be it through photography or other things, always think positive and BE positive.

    Growing up too fast

Last night we had NOTHING going on.  That is a pretty crazy thing.  Between all of our schedules, it is hard to come by.  My oldest suggested we go to a park together and take photos because she most lovingly admonished me in her sweet nine year old voice that I am constantly taking photos of other people’s families, and not of them.  As much as I hated to agree with her, she had a point, so we scoped out some BEAUTIFUL blossoming trees and took photos.  It was today as I was looking through them all, and as I contemplate the end of another school year, that my kids are growing us SO STINKIN fast!!  I remember having so many people tell me how fast it goes, and they were right!!  I am thankful to be on to this next stage in their lives, but there are days I would’t mind having them all around to snuggle with, nap with, tottle with and explore the big world with.  If you are in that stage of life where your kiddos are small and you are struggling with wondering if they will ever move on and get to the next _____ (you fill that blank in), let me assure you, it WILL come, and VERY fast!!  So today, enjoy every minute of it.

      52 weeks:: Week 8

So I have to admit, I have been a little lax in doing this project this month, mainly because we have had about 100 snow days (ok 5) sick kids, a sick mom, and just trying to play catch up with the behind the scenes work of the business.  But progress, not perfection right?!  So even though I have skipped 2 weeks, we are back and kickin’ on yet another snowy day in MN and another day off of school.  I am really hoping for an early spring and a LONG, HOT summer!!  Happy Friday, and if you are traveling today anywhere in the midwest, stay safe!!

Events of our past week include:

Playing outside in the 40 (yea!!) degree weather
      Celebrating Elise’s 7th birthday
      Valentine’s day
      Elise’s “Spa” birthday party
      A much needed date night
      Another snow day
Paying outside in the winter storm
