Mini Session vs. Petite Session: What’s the Difference and Which is Right for You?

As a photographer who has spent years capturing milestones—from newborn cuddles to senior portraits—I know that choosing the right session type can feel a little overwhelming. If you’ve browsed my booking page recently, you might have noticed two options that seem similar: the Mini Session and the Petite Session. So what’s the difference? And which one is the best fit for your family or season of life?

Let’s break it down so you can confidently choose the session that makes the most sense for you.

What is a Petite Session?

A Petite Session is a short and sweet photography session offered on specific dates at a pre-determined location. These sessions are ideal if you’re looking for a quick refresh on family photos, need a few updated shots of your kids, or want a seasonal snapshot like fall colors or spring blossoms.

Details of a Petite Session:

  • 15-minute session
  • 25-30 high-resolution digital images
  • Set date and location
  • Perfect for: Holiday card photos, seasonal updates, or families with young kids who don’t want a long session

These sessions are offered a few times a year—think spring blooms or peak fall colors. Because they’re quick and at a reduced rate, they fill fast!

What is a Mini Session?

A Mini Session is one you are probably more familiar with and if you have booked with me in the past, the same mini session you are used to. It is still a shorter session than a full one, but it’s longer and more flexible than a petite. These sessions are a bit longer and If you want a bit more time for connection, multiple backgrounds, or a pet, this is your go-to.

Details of a Mini Session:

  • 25-minute session
  • 45-50 high-resolution digital images
  • Pets allowed
  • Perfect for: Maternity photos, couples, milestone sessions, or families wanting a little more time

Mini sessions offer the best of both worlds—more flexibility than a petite, but still simple and efficient if you don’t need a full hour session.

Why a Mini Session is the Perfect Fit for Your Family

Let’s be honest—family photos are so important, but the thought of planning them? It can feel overwhelming. Coordinating outfits, getting the kids (and maybe a reluctant spouse!) on board, and making sure everyone is in a good mood? That’s a lot to take on. But what if I told you there’s a way to get beautiful, professional photos without all the stress?

That’s where mini sessions come in! These short, relaxed sessions are the perfect solution for busy families, toddlers with short attention spans, and even parents who aren’t exactly thrilled about being in front of the camera.

    Why Book a Mini Session?

    • Short & Sweet: Mini sessions typically last about 15-20 minutes, which means no long, drawn-out shoots. It’s quick, easy, and perfect for kids who lose interest fast.
    • Less Stress: No need to overthink outfits or spend hours convincing everyone to smile for the camera. Minis are fun, fast-paced, and designed to keep things light and enjoyable.
    • Budget-Friendly: A mini session is an affordable way to get high-quality, professional photos without committing to a full session.
    • Perfect for Updates: Whether it’s a holiday card, milestone moment, or just time for some fresh family photos, a mini session is a great way to update your pictures without a major time commitment.

Who is a Mini Session Best For?

    • Families with young children who may not last through a full-length session
    • Parents who kind of dread taking photos but still want beautiful memories
    • Busy families who want high-quality images without a big time commitment

Lyndale Park :: Minneapolis Family Session

This spring, I had the absolute pleasure of reconnecting with Ashley and Tyler for a delightful family session at Lyndale Park in Minneapolis. Having photographed their wedding back in September 2023 at Abella Farm, it was a joy to see them again and capture new memories for their growing family.

Lyndale Park was in full bloom, with vibrant tulips painting the landscape in a rainbow of colors. The bright, cheerful flowers provided the perfect backdrop for our session. Ashley and Tyler, now seasoned pros in front of the camera, were as warm and wonderful as ever. Their love for each other shone through in every shot, and their children added an extra layer of joy and energy to the session.

One of the highlights of our time together was the fun twist they incorporated at the end of the session. Big fans of Blink-182, Ashley and Tyler decided to throw on some band t-shirts and sunglasses for a rock and roll themed photo shoot. As Tyler played Blink-182 tracks in the background, the whole family got into the spirit. The boys were especially enthusiastic, dancing and striking playful poses that had us all laughing.

It was a perfect blend of fun and nostalgia, capturing not only their love for each other but also their shared passions. Seeing the kids’ excitement and Ashley and Tyler’s radiant smiles reminded me why I love doing what I do.

Thank you, Ashley and Tyler, for inviting me to capture these special moments. Your family session was a highlight of my spring, and I look forward to many more photo adventures with you in the future.
